The ginger has documented antiviral activity against rhinoviruses, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), HSV-1 (herpes labialis) and flu A/H1N1 : gingerols and shogaols inhibit viral attachment and intracellular replication in several in vitro and animal studies.

Antiviral mechanisms of ginger

Ginger interferes with the viral cycle at several stages:

• Viral attachment: gingerols bind to viral surface proteins (hemagglutinin, HSV glycoproteins) → ↓ adhesion to host cells
• Replication: inhibition of viral enzymes (proteases, RNA polymerase) by shogaols
• Immune signaling: activation of TLR (Toll-Like Receptors) pathways → production of endogenous interferons (IFN-β)

Ginger and herpes labialis (HSV-1)

A 2023 study (Viruses journal) demonstrates anti-HSV-1 activity of 6-gingerol in cell culture (IC50 = 3.2 µM), with 78% inhibition of the viral load. In clinical practice, the evidence remains limited — no published randomized controlled trials on herpes labialis. But topical use (ginger gel) shows promising preliminary results on the healing of lesions.

Ginger and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus)

The most robust research concerns RSV: a 2013 study (Journal of Ethnopharmacology) on bronchial epithelial cells shows that fresh ginger benefits (but not the dried one) effectively blocks RSV attachment and internalization. 6-gingerol (intact in the fresh ginger/cold pressed) is the key compound — it partially degrades to 6-shogaol upon drying/heating.
