What is IBS and why do traditional treatments fail?
Irritable bowel syndrome affects 10-15% of the global population (Hungin et al., Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 2003). It is the most common functional digestive disorder. It is characterized by three interconnected components:
- Visceral hypersensitivity — the intestinal pain threshold is lowered
- Dysmotility — transit too fast (diarrhea/IBS-D) or too slow (constipation/IBS-C)
- Gut-brain axis dysfunction — disrupted bidirectional communication between the enteric nervous system and the brain
Conventional treatments target ONE pillar: anti-spasmodics (pain), loperamide (diarrhea), fiber (constipation). None treat the underlying inflammation that fuels all three.
How does ginger work on IBS symptoms?
| IBS problem | Ginger mechanism | Drug equivalent | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bloating | Prokinetic — accelerates gastric emptying by 25% | Domperidone | Wu et al., Eur J Gastro Hepatol, 2008 |
| Visceral pain | 5-HT3 antagonism (same target as alosetron) | Alosetron (SII-D) | Pertz et al. Planta Med, 2011 |
| Spasms | Intestinal smooth muscle relaxation | Mebeverine | Ghayur et al., Dig Dis Sci, 2005 |
| Micro-inflammation | Intestinal NF-κB inhibition | Mesalazine (off-label) | Grzanna et al., J Med Food, 2005 |
| IBS anxiety | BDNF + cortisol modulation (gut-brain axis) | SSRIs (antidepressants) | Mao et al., Food Function, 2019 |
| Dysbiosis | Prebiotic effect — bacterial diversity | Probiotics | Wang et al., J Agric Food Chem, 2019 |
Why sugar makes IBS worse
Fructose is a FODMAP (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols). A shot of ginger with 34g sugar/100ml (like Gimber) contains excess fructose which ferments in the colon, causing gas, bloating and diarrhea — exactly the symptoms of the IBS you're trying to treat. It's counterproductive.

Frequently asked questions
Does ginger really help IBS?
Yes. Several clinical studies show that ginger accelerates gastric emptying (Wu et al., 2008), reduces visceral pain via 5-HT3 antagonism (Pertz et al., 2011), and modulates the intestinal microbiome (Wang et al., 2019). Ginger acts simultaneously on the 3 pillars of IBS: pain, motility and inflammation.
Is ginger low FODMAP?
Fresh ginger is recognized as low FODMAP by Monash University. INTI contains only 1.19g of sugar/100ml, making it compatible with a strict low FODMAP diet. Sweet ginger shots (34g sugar/100ml) are NOT low FODMAP.
How long before you see results?
The prokinetic effect (reduction of bloating) is often felt from the first dose. The intestinal anti-inflammatory effect generally requires 2-4 weeks of regular consumption. The effect on the microbiome develops over 4-8 weeks.
