What is intestinal candidiasis?

Candida albicans is a fungus naturally present in the gut microbiome. In a healthy individual, it is maintained in balance by commensal bacteria. Candida albicans feeds mainly on glucose and fructose. A diet rich in sugar creates an optimal environment for its proliferation (Vargas et al., Eukaryotic Cell, 2010).
