What is intestinal candidiasis?
Candida albicans is a fungus naturally present in the gut microbiome. In a healthy individual, it is maintained in balance by commensal bacteria. Candidiasis occurs when this balance is disrupted – antibiotics, diet rich in sugar, immunosuppression, chronic stress – and Candida proliferates pathologically.
Symptoms include: chronic bloating, unexplained fatigue, sugar cravings, brain fog, recurring infections (Kumamoto, Current Opinion in Microbiology, 2011). It is estimated that 70% of the population harbors Candida, but only a minority develop symptomatic candidiasis.
How Does Ginger Fight Candida?
| Mechanism | Action | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Membrane disruption | Gingerol and shogaol alter fungal membrane permeability | Aghazadeh et al., Jundishapur J Microbiol, 2016 |
| Anti-biofilm | Inhibits Candida biofilm formation (MIC 0.39 mg/ml) | Mohammadi-Sichani et al., IJMS, 2017 |
| Anti-hyphal transition | Blocks the yeast→hypha transition (invasive form) | Karuppiah & Rajaram, Int J Pharm Sci, 2012 |
| Intestinal NF-κB | Reduces inflammation that promotes fungal overgrowth | Grzanna et al., J Med Food, 2005 |
| Microbiome | Prebiotic effect — promotes bacteria that control Candida | Wang et al., J Agric Food Chem, 2019 |
Why Sugar is Candida Fuel
Candida albicans feeds mainly on glucose and fructose. A diet rich in sugar creates an optimal environment for its proliferation (Vargas et al., Eukaryotic Cell, 2010). A shot of ginger containing 34g sugar/100ml literally feeds the fungus you are trying to fight. This is the ultimate paradox of sugary “health shots”.
INTI contains 1.19g sugar/100ml — a level too low to fuel fungal growth, while still delivering the antifungal active ingredients of ginger.
Frequently asked questions
Is ginger antifungal?
Yes. Several in vitro studies demonstrate that gingerol and shogaol inhibit the growth of Candida albicans with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.39-3.12 mg/ml (Aghazadeh et al., 2016). The effect is comparable to certain synthetic antifungals for mild forms.
Should we eliminate sugar in case of candidiasis?
Reducing sugar is recommended by the majority of practitioners. Candida uses glucose as its primary energy source. A classic anti-candidiasis diet limits added sugars, refined carbohydrates and alcohol.
How long to see results?
The antifungal effect is gradual. Studies suggest 4-8 weeks of regular consumption for a significant effect on intestinal fungal load, combined with a suitable diet.
