Atopic Eczema: Th2 Imbalance
Atopic dermatitis affects 15–20% of children and 5–10% of adults in Belgium. The main cause is a dominant Th2 immune imbalance: IL-4 and IL-13 activate IgE production and reduce the expression of skin barrier proteins (filaggrin, loricrin). The ginger skin "leaks" allergens, creating an inflammation-dryness-scratch cycle. Ginger works upstream in this cycle.
Mechanisms of Ginger in Eczema
1. Reduction of Th2 Response (IL-4, IL-13, IgE)
IL-4 and IL-13 are the hallmark cytokines of atopic eczema — new biologics (dupilumab, tralokinumab) target these. Gingerols → inflammation-mecanisme-cle-ginger-sugar-explanation-2026">NF-κB in Th2 lymphocytes↓ → IL-4↓, IL-13↓ → total IgE↓ in eczema animal models. Effect on systemic allergic sensitization.
2. Reduction of Itching
Itching is the most debilitating symptom of eczema. Mediated by substance P (neuropeptide), histamine, and TRPV1 receptors. Gingerols → substance P↓ + partial TRPV1 inhibition → itch relief.
3. Improvement of Skin Barrier
Th2 inflammation reduces filaggrin and ceramides (components of the skin barrier). Ginger via IL-4/IL-13 reduction → better filaggrin expression → restoration of skin impermeability.
4. Anti-Staphylococcal Activity
Staphylococcus aureus colonizes 90% of eczema lesions and exacerbates inflammation through its superantigens. Gingerols show documented antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against S. aureus.
INTI Protocol for Eczema
- Internal intake: 1–2 INTI shots daily continuously
- During flare-ups: 2–3 shots daily + reduction of pro-inflammatory foods
- Evaluation period: 8–12 weeks (Th2 immune response modulation takes time)
- Holistic: Probiotics (Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG), omega-3, vitamin D3 — synergistic Th2-modulating with ginger
Frequently Asked Questions
Can ginger replace cortisone cream?
No. Cortisone cream is the standard treatment for acute flare-ups. Ginger is a systemic supplement. It can reduce the frequency and intensity of flare-ups, thus requiring less cortisone — but always under dermatological supervision.
Is ginger safe for children with eczema?
Safe from 6 years of age in dietary doses. Parents can try half a dose of INTI diluted in warm water. Consult a pediatrician for children under 6 years or with a severe allergic history.
Can I use ginger with dupilumab?
No documented interaction. Ginger and dupilumab work at complementary levels (systemic anti-Th2 vs. biological IL-4/IL-13 direct). Inform your dermatologist.
