Ginger and breast cancer: prevention, hormones, and chemotherapy

Ginger inhibits the proliferation of breast cancer cells (MCF-7, MDA-MB-231) via several mechanisms and reduces chemotherapy-induced nausea by 40% according to a 2023 meta-analysis (4 RCTs, 312 patients). It is not a treatment, but its value as an adjuvant and in prevention is documented.

Anti-tumor mechanisms of ginger on breast cancer

  • Anti-proliferative: 6-shogaol and zingerone induce apoptosis of MCF-7 (hormone-dependent breast cancer) and MDA-MB-231 (triple-negative) cells in vitro
  • Partial anti-estrogenic: some gingerols interfere with ER-alpha receptors → potentially useful in post-hormone-dependent cancer (to be validated clinically)
  • Anti-angiogenic: VEGF-A inhibition → reduction of tumor neovascularization
  • Immuno-modulatory: activation of NK cells (Natural Killer cells) → anti-tumor surveillance

Ginger and chemotherapy-induced nausea (CIN)

The most solid clinical application: 1-1.5g/day of ginger extract reduces the frequency and intensity of chemotherapy-induced nausea (CINV). The 2023 meta-analysis (Supportive Care in Cancer) on 4 RCTs confirms a 40% reduction in CINV score vs. placebo, with an excellent safety profile.

Important: ginger does not replace standard antiemetics (ondansetron, metoclopramide) but can be used in conjunction with them. Some oncologists integrate it into supportive care protocols.

Important oncological precautions

  • Potential interaction with tamoxifen: ginger inhibits CYP3A4 at high doses — inform your doctor
  • Anticoagulant: in chemotherapy, altered coagulation factors are often present — avoid high doses (>2g/day) without medical advice
  • Never substitute for standard oncological treatment

Prevention: risk factors addressed by ginger

Breast cancer is promoted by chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and ginger insulin resistance (hyperinsulinemia). Ginger acts on all three:

  • ↓ Systemic curcuma-poivre-noir-douleur-chronique">natural anti-inflammatory (CRP, IL-6, TNF-α)
  • ↓ Oxidative stress (ROS neutralization)
  • Insulin resistance (improved insulin sensitivity) — see ginger and blood sugar

These factors can be addressed with regular ginger consumption — see INTI Drink (zero sugar, 1.19g/100ml).
