Ginger and High Blood Pressure: Lowering Blood Pressure Naturally

High blood pressure (hypertension) affects 1 in 3 Belgians. Ginger has several documented hypotensive mechanisms of action, in addition to standard lifestyle and dietary measures.

Hypotensive mechanisms of ginger

  • Calcium inhibition: gingerols block calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle cells → vasodilation (mechanism similar to calcium channel blockers like amlodipine)
  • ACE inhibition: slight inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme (like medicinal ACE inhibitors)
  • Mild diuretic effect: reduces blood volume
  • Antiplatelet: reduces blood viscosity

Meta-analysis: ginger and blood pressure

A meta-analysis of 6 randomized trials (Phytomedicine, 2019): ginger supplementation (2-3g/day) reduced systolic blood pressure by 6.36 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by 2.12 mmHg on average. A moderate but significant effect, especially in grade 1 hypertensives.

Interactions with antihypertensives

⚠️ Ginger can potentiate the effect of antihypertensives (risk of hypotension). If you are taking medication for blood pressure, consult your doctor before starting concentrated ginger supplementation.

Sodium and blood pressure: salt-free ginger

INTI Drink contains no added sodium — important for hypertensives who need to limit their sodium intake. INTI vs GIMBER comparison: check the label as some ginger shots contain salt or sodium-based flavor enhancers.

GIMBER's sugar (~34g/100ml) also contributes to hypertension via chronic hyperinsulinemia (activation of the renin-angiotensin system). INTI (1.19g/100ml) is neutral on this parameter.
