Ginger and thyroid : Hashimoto, hypothyroidism and anti-inflammatory-inflammation-natural-remedy">inflammation

Autoimmune thyroid diseases (Hashimoto, Graves) are on the rise. The ginger, through its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, is attracting growing interest in this context.

Hashimoto’s: an autoimmune inflammatory disease

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease where the support the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. Chronic inflammation is central: lymphocytic infiltration, activation NF-κB, elevation of anti-TPO and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies.

Potential Effects of Ginger on Hashimoto

Reduction of thyroid inflammation

NF-κB inhibition by gingerol theoretically reduces thyroid autoimmune inflammation. Animal studies (autoimmune thyroiditis models) show a reduction in lymphocytic infiltration and anti-thyroid antibodies with ginger extracts.

Immune modulation

Ginger modulates the Th1/Th2 balance of the immune system. Hashimoto's is a predominantly Th1 disease — ginger may help rebalance towards Th2, reducing the autoimmune attack.

Effect on T4→T3 conversion

In vitro studies suggest that gingerol stimulates deiodinase (enzyme converting T4 to active T3). Not confirmed in human clinical practice to date.

What science does not yet confirm

  • No randomized clinical trial on ginger + Hashimoto in humans
  • TSH/T3/T4 effects are not clinically documented
  • Ginger does not replace levothyroxine (L-thyroxine)

Important precautions

  • Drug interactions : ginger can slightly modify the absorption of levothyroxine — always take L-thyroxine on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before any food or supplement
  • Goitrogens : ginger is not goitrogenic (unlike soy, cabbage, etc.)
  • Consult your endocrinologist before any change in protocol

Practical conclusion

Ginger can be used by people with Hashimoto's like anti-inflammatory ginger general (NF-κB), without direct risk to the thyroid. INTI (0 added sugar) is particularly suitable because people with hypothyroidism often have a tendency to ginger resistance ginger insulin and overweight.
