Acne is an inflammatory disease of the skin. Ginger acts on several mechanisms involved in acne, internally (shot) and topically.

Mechanisms of ginger against acne

Skin anti-inflammatory

Inflammatory acne (papules, pustules, nodules) is caused by an excessive immune response to Cutibacterium acnes. Gingerol inhibits:

• NF-κB in keratinocytes → reduces cutaneous IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α
• COX-2 → fewer pro-inflammatory skin prostaglandins

Antibacterial activity

In vitro studies show that gingerol and shogaol have antibacterial activity against C. acnes — the bacteria mainly involved in acne. The mechanism: disruption of the bacterial membrane.

Sebum regulation

Excess sebum (hyperseborrhea) is a key factor in acne. Gingerol inhibits 5-alpha reductase (converting enzyme testosterone → DHT) — DHT stimulates the sebaceous glands. Similar (partial) effect to retinoids.

Skin antioxidant

The cortisol-natural">ginger oxidative stress aggravates acne (oxidation of sebaceous squalene → formation of comedones). Gingerol is a lipophilic antioxidant that penetrates the skin and reduces this stress oxidative.

Topical vs internal use

Internally (INTI shot) : systemic action on inflammation, sebum and the gut-axisskin (microbiota intestinal → skin inflammation). Long-term effect (4-8 weeks).

Topical : a few drops of diluted INTI applied locally to spots → local antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. Warning: may sting sensitive skin.

Gut-skin axis

Acne is strongly linked to systemic inflammation and gut dysbiosis. Ginger improves intestinal health (prokinetic, intestinal anti-inflammatory, partial prebiotic) → improvement of the gut-skin axis → better skin.
