Digestion is one of the oldest uses of ginger — and one of the best scientifically validated. From bloating to the pain of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ginger intervenes at several levels of the digestive system.
How ginger works on digestion
1. Acceleration of gastric emptying
Ginger stimulates stomach motility. A randomized study (Wu et al., 2008, European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology) on 24 healthy volunteers shows that 1.2g of ginger reduces gastric emptying time by 50% compared to placebo. Less stagnation = less bloating, less reflux.
2. Carminative action (anti-gas)
Ginger is a recognized carminative: it reduces the formation of gas in the intestine and facilitates their evacuation. [6]-gingerol inhibits the production of bacterial enzymes responsible for excessive fermentation in the colon.
3. Modulation of theinflammation intestinal
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) involves low-grade inflammation of the intestinal mucosa, with activation of NF-κB. Gingerol inhibits this pathway, reducing local pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, TNF-α) that cause the spasms and pain characteristic of IBS.
4. Effect on the microbiota
Several in vitro studies (2020-2023) show that ginger polyphenols have an effect prebiotic : they promote the growth of beneficial bacteria (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium) while inhibiting pathogens such as Helicobacter pylori.
Clinical Studies in Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Bloating study — van Tilburg et al. (2014)
Double-blind randomized trial on 45 patients with functional IBS: 1g of ginger/day for 28 days. Results:
- Significant reduction in bloating (p=0.003)
- Improvement in abdominal pain (p=0.008)
- No notable side effects
Functional dyspepsia
Functional dyspepsia (difficult digestion without a found organic cause) affects approximately 15% of the population. A 2019 meta-analysis (Journal of Ethnopharmacology) of 6 studies concluded that ginger significantly reduces symptoms of dyspepsia, including postprandial nausea and early feeling of fullness.
Ginger + turmeric-black-pepper-synergy-benefits">turmeric: dual action on the irritable intestine
The ginger + turmeric combination is particularly relevant for IBS:
- The gingerol acts on gastric motility and emptying
- The curcumin (with piperine for ×20 bioavailability) reduces inflammation of the colonic mucosa
- A 2012 study (Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology) specifically tested turmeric + ginger in IBS with positive results on pain and quality of life
Practical protocol for digestion
Optimal timing:
- Before the meal (15-20 min): to stimulate gastric emptying and prepare the intestine
- After the meal : in case of post-prandial bloating, 1 shot can accelerate transit
- In the morning fasting : action on the microbiota and the intestinal axisbrain
Minimum duration to observe effects on IBS: 3 to 4 weeks of regular consumption.
Who should be careful
- People suffering from reflux ginger gastroenteritis-esophageal (GERD) severe: ginger can sometimes worsen symptoms in some patients
- Calculations bile : ginger stimulates bile production — consult a doctor
- Takinganticoagulants : potential interaction to monitor
Why INTI for digestive health?
INTI combines the two best-documented active ingredients for digestion:
- organic ginger in Belgium Peru — gingerol at high concentration for motility and bloating
- Organic turmeric Peru + piperine — action anti-inflammatory ginger on the intestinal mucosa, bioavailability ×20
- Organic erythritol — GI 0, does not ferment in the colon like fructose or sorbitol (important for people with IBS)
- Lemon from organic Sicily — stimulates bile production and lipid digestion
