The bloating-reflux-nausea">ginger and laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) — or “silent reflux” — is treated in part by ginger thanks to its prokinetic effect (accelerated gastric emptying) and anti-inflammatory ginger on the pharyngeal mucosa. Unlike classic GERD, LPR does not always cause heartburn but ENT symptoms: hoarse voice, irritated throat, cough chronic, feeling of a lump in the throat (globus).

LPR vs GERD: why the treatment differs

Laryngopharyngeal reflux is often non-acidic (alkaline reflux, gas reflux) or weak acidic. PPIs (omeprazole, pantoprazole) are less effective on LPR than on GERD. Functional approaches — including ginger — sometimes show better results.

Mechanisms of ginger on LPR

  • Prokinetics: accelerates gastric emptying → less content available to rise
  • Toning of the LES: gingerols partially strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter
  • Pharyngeal anti-inflammatory: reduces irritation of the laryngeal mucosa exposed to acid/pepsin reflux
  • Anti-pepsin effect: gingerols partially neutralize peptic activity (central enzyme in LPR lesions)

Caution: crucial timing

Important: In cases of severe LPR, ginger on an empty stomach can temporarily worsen symptoms in certain subjects. Start with a low dose (2.5ml in 200ml of water, after a light meal) rather than on an empty stomach. If tolerated, gradually move to the standard shot.

  3. Ginger 500 mg/day after the main meal
  4. Alginates (Gaviscon) as symptomatic treatment if necessary
  5. Consult an ENT if symptoms > 4 weeks (laryngoscopy recommended)
