Curcumin and liver protection
| Mechanism | Action | Clinical outcome | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glutathione | Increase +32% | Better phase II detoxification | Bao et al., 2010 |
| Nrf2 activation | Antioxidant enzyme induction | Protection against oxidative stress | Yan et al., 2018 |
| NF-κB inhibition | Reduction of liver inflammation | Less fibrosis | Aggarwal et al., 2004 |
| ALDH upregulation | Acceleration of acetaldehyde metabolism | Protection against alcohol | Bao et al., 2010 |
Ginger and fatty liver
Rahimlou et al. (Hepatitis Monthly, 2016) studied 44 NAFLD patients receiving 2 g of ginger/day for 12 weeks. Results: significant reduction in liver enzymes ALT and AST, markers of liver damage. The mechanism: ginger improves hepatic insulin sensitivity and reduces lipogenesis.
The sweet “detox” paradox
Fructose is metabolized exclusively by the liver — just like alcohol. Lustig et al. (Nature, 2012) demonstrated that excess fructose causes the same liver damage as alcohol: de novo lipogenesis, insulin resistance, steatosis. A “detox shot” with 34 g of sugar subjects the liver to the same stress as a glass of alcohol.
The real detoxification
The word "detox" has no scientific definition in nutraceuticals. What science recognizes: the liver detoxifies via phases I (CYP450) and II (conjugation). Glutathione is the key substrate of phase II. Curcumin increases glutathione by 32% — that's science-backed liver support.
FAQs
Is ginger good for the liver?
Yes. Ginger reduces liver enzymes ALT and AST in NAFLD patients (Rahimlou et al., 2016). Curcumin increases hepatic glutathione by 32% and activates the Nrf2 pathway.
Does ginger help after alcohol?
Curcumin upregulates ALDH (enzyme that breaks down toxic acetaldehyde) and increases glutathione. It’s liver support, not a hangover “cure”.
