Pregnancy nausea affects 70-80% of pregnant women (ACOG, 2018). Hyperemesis gravidarum, the severe form, affects 0.3-3% and may require hospitalization. Ginger is one of the few natural remedies with a high level of evidence for these symptoms.
What the studies say
A meta-analysis by Viljoen et al. (Nutrition Journal, 2014) analyzed 12 randomized clinical trials involving 1,278 pregnant women. Result: ginger significantly reduces nausea and vomiting during pregnancy compared to placebo, with a favorable safety profile.
The mechanism: 5-HT3 antagonism
Ginger acts by the same mechanism as ondansetron (Zofran®), the reference antiemetic drug: antagonism of serotonergic 5-HT3 receptors. This receptor, located in the gastrointestinal tract and the vomiting center (area postrema), is the main trigger of nausea (Lien et al., Anaesthesia, 2003).
| Antiemetic | Mechanism | Effectiveness | Pregnancy safety |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ginger (1g/day) | 5-HT3 antagonist | Reduces nausea vs. placebo | ✅ No teratogenic risk (Heitmann et al., 2013) |
| Ondansetron (Zofran) | 5-HT3 antagonist | Very effective | ⚠️ Controversial (potential fetal heart risks) |
| Doxylamine + B6 | H1 antihistamine | Effective | ✅ Considered safe |
| Metoclopramide | D2 antagonist | Effective | ⚠️ Extrapyramidal effects |
Why sugar is critical during pregnancy
Gestational diabetes affects 2-10% of pregnancies. Excessive sugar consumption increases this risk. An “anti-nausea” shot with 34 g of sugar per 100 ml:
- Represents 136% of the recommended daily sugar intake
- Increases risk of gestational diabetes
- Causes blood sugar spikes that can make nausea worse (reactive hypoglycemia triggers nausea)
- Contributes to excessive weight gain during pregnancy
INTI, with only 1.19 g of sugar per 100 ml, provides the antiemetic effect of ginger without the glycemic risk.
FAQs
Is ginger safe during pregnancy?
Yes. The cohort study by Heitmann et al. (2013) on 68,522 women showed no increased risk of malformations, stillbirth, or low birth weight with ginger use during pregnancy.
How much ginger during pregnancy?
Studies use 1-1.5 g of ginger per day, divided into 2-4 doses. INTI offers an easily adjustable concentrated dose.
When to take ginger for morning sickness?
Ideally when you wake up, before getting up. The antiemetic effect is greatest when ginger is taken preventively, not once nausea has set in.
