🛒 I discover INTI — less than €1/dayGastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects 20-30% of the Western population. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like omeprazole are widely prescribed, but their long-term side effects — magnesium malabsorption, increased risk of Clostridioides difficile, bone fractures — push patients to seek natural alternatives. Ginger is one of the most promising.
Ginger: natural prokinetic validated by science
Hu et al. (European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, 2011) demonstrated that 1.2 g of ginger accelerates gastric emptying by 25%. Why it's crucial for GERD: A stomach that empties faster = less pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter = less reflux.
| Mechanism | Action of ginger | Effect on GERD | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gastric emptying | +25% acceleration | Reduction of gastric pressure | Hu et al., 2011 |
| Anti-nausea | 5-HT3 antagonism | Relief from associated nausea | Ernst & Pittler, 2000 |
| Anti-inflammatory | NF-κB inhibition | Reduction of esophageal inflammation | Grzanna et al., 2005 |
| Prokinetics | Antral motility stimulation | Less gastric stasis | Micklefield et al., 1999 |
Turmeric: protection of the esophageal mucosa
Curcumin reduces acid reflux-induced esophageal inflammation via inhibition of NF-κB and reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNF-α (Mahattanadul et al., Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2006). It is a logical complement to prokinetic ginger.
The trap of sugary shots against reflux
Many “wellness shots” contain 15-34g of sugar per 100ml. Problem: sugar slows gastric emptying (Ma et al., Diabetology, 1995) — exactly the opposite of what is needed for GERD. A sugary “anti-reflux” shot potentially worsens the problem it claims to solve.
| Product | Sugar/100ml | Gastric emptying effect | Anti-reflux consistency |
|---|---|---|---|
| INTI | 1.19g | Neutral/favorable | ✅ Consistent |
| Gimber | 34g | Slowdown | ❌ Contradictory |
| Apple juice | 10g | Moderate slowdown | ⚠️ Suboptimal |
Optimal protocol with ginger for GERD
Studies suggest taking ginger 30 minutes before meals to activate gastric emptying before the arrival of food. The effective dose is 1-2 g of ginger extract, which corresponds to approximately 30-60 ml of a concentrated shot like NRTI.
FAQs
Can ginger make reflux worse?
In excessive doses (>6 g/day), ginger can irritate the stomach. At normal doses (1-2 g), it is prokinetic and beneficial for gastric emptying.
Can we replace PPIs with ginger?
No. Ginger is complementary, not a substitute for prescribed treatments. Consult your doctor before changing a PPI treatment.
Why does sugar make reflux worse?
Sugar slows gastric emptying, increasing intragastric pressure and therefore the risk of reflux. A sugar-free shot is more consistent.
