The direct link between liquid sugar and ginger skin: the science
Nutritional dermatology has shown a strong correlation between high glycemic load and acne severity. The meta-analysis by Burris et al. (J Acad Nutr Diet, 2014) concludes that diets with high glycemic load significantly increase acne in adolescents and young adults.

1. Insulin/IGF-1 → increased sebum production
A 330ml can of soda generates an insulin spike (anabolic hormone) and stimulates hepatic IGF-1. IGF-1 activates sebaceous gland receptors, increasing their sebum production. Excess sebum clogs hair follicles, creating an anaerobic environment where Cutibacterium acnes thrives.
2. Insulin → hyperandrogenism in women
In women, hyperinsulinemia stimulates ovarian and adrenal cortex androgen production (testosterone, DHEA-S). Androgens are the primary hormonal modulators of acne — which is why women with PCOS (insulin-resistant hyperandrogenism) often suffer from severe acne.
3. Fructose → AGE/RAGE glycation → skin inflammation
Fructose is 7-10× more reactive than glucose for protein glycation (formation of AGE — Advanced Glycation End-products). Cutaneous AGE activate RAGE receptors → NF-κB inflammation in keratinocytes and fibroblasts → rosacea, eczema, premature aging.
