Lupus and inflammation in Belgium: what the numbers hide
In Belgium, approximately 15,000 to 20,000 people live with systemic lupus erythematosus, 85% of whom are women of childbearing age. SLE is characterized by unpredictable flares, multi-organ involvement (kidneys, ginger skin, joints, brain) and chronic overactivation of the adaptive immune system.
What is less known: diet—and sugary drinks in particular—directly influences the frequency and severity of flares through several documented molecular mechanisms.
Mechanisms: how sugar amplifies lupus
1. AGEs and RAGE: fuel for immune complexes
Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), formed by the reaction of glucose with proteins, activate the RAGE receptor on dendritic cells and macrophages. In SLE, this activation triggers the release of NETs (Neutrophil Extracellular Traps)—DNA traps that fuel the production of anti-dsDNA autoantibodies. Each sugary drink at 10–11 g/100 ml contributes to the circulating AGE load.
2. NF-κB: the master regulator of lupus flares
NF-κB is overactivated in SLE; it orchestrates the production of BAFF (B-cell Activating Factor), which promotes the survival of autoreactive B lymphocytes and the production of anti-nuclear IgG. Sugar—via insulin resistance and LPS from gut dysbiosis—maintains NF-κB in a state of chronic activation.
6-gingerol inhibits IKKβ, the kinase that activates NF-κB, reducing BAFF, IL-6, and IL-12 (Jin et al., Phytomedicine 2021).
3. mTORC1 and ginger and Th17 metabolism
Th17 cells (overrepresented in SLE) depend on mTORC1 for their differentiation. Hyperglycemia activates mTORC1 via the PI3K/Akt pathway, amplifying the production of IL-17A—a key cytokine in lupus renal involvement (nephritis). Shogaol inhibits mTORC1 and reduces the Th17/IL-17 axis.
4. Microbiome and intestinal permeability
In SLE, the microbiome is depleted in Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and enriched in Ruminococcus gnavus—a producer of a glucorhamnan polysaccharide that directly activates plasmacytoid dendritic cells and amplifies interferon-α production. Sugar feeds this imbalance. Ginger, a prebiotic, supports F. prausnitzii and strengthens the epithelial barrier (occludin, claudin-1).
Beverage comparison: inflammatory load for lupus
| Beverage | Sugar /100 ml | SLE Impact | Anti-inflammatory actives |
|---|---|---|---|
| INTI best ginger shot | <4 g | ✅ NF-κB↓, BAFF↓, IL-17↓ | 6-gingerol, shogaol, curcumin |
| GIMBER concentrate | ~35 g | ❌ AGE↑, NF-κB↑ | Trace (diluted in sugar) |
| Coca-Cola | 10.6 g | ❌ ginger insulin↑, LPS↑ | None |
| 100% fruit juice | 9–12 g | ❌ Fructose → mTOR↑ | Low (polyphenols) |
| Iced tea | 8–10 g | ❌ RAGE activated | Minimal |
| Still water | 0 g | ✅ Neutral | None |
Recommended beverage protocol for people with SLE
| Time | Recommended beverage | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Morning on an empty stomach | INTI shot (diluted if needed) | 6-gingerol peak absorption, basal NF-κB↓ |
| Before meals | Water or ginger infusion | Avoid post-meal glycemic spike |
| Moderate physical effort | Water + INTI (after effort) | Hydration + anti-inflammatory ginger without sugar |
| Evening | ginger tea or water | Avoid nighttime caffeine and sugar |
| To avoid | Sodas, industrial juices, energy drinks, pure GIMBER — all >8 g sugar/100 ml | |
What research says about ginger and auto-ginger and immunity
A 2022 review published in Nutrients analyzed 14 studies on ginger and autoimmune diseases. Key findings:
- NF-κB↓ in 12/14 studies in vivo and in vitro
- IL-6 reduced by 28–41% in murine lupus models (MRL/lpr)
- Proteinuria reduced in lupus nephritis models
- 6-shogaol inhibits the JAK-STAT pathway, critical in interferon-α signaling (lupus signature)
Note: these studies do not replace medical treatment (hydroxychloroquine, immunosuppressants). INTI is a food supplement, not a medication.
❓ FAQ — Lupus and ginger (click to expand)
Does ginger interact with hydroxychloroquine?
No clinically documented interaction. As a precaution, take INTI at a different time (2h) from anticoagulant medications if you are on warfarin (lupus + APS). Consult your rheumatologist.
Can INTI be consumed during a lupus flare?
INTI does not contain major allergens or substances prohibited in SLE. However, each case is different—it is preferable to consult your doctor during an active flare.
Is turmeric also useful?
Curcumin (in INTI Turmeric) also inhibits NF-κB and STAT3. Some INTI formulas combine ginger + turmeric for a synergistic effect.
What dose of ginger is studied?
Clinical studies use 1–3 g of dry extract/day. An INTI shot provides a concentrated dose equivalent to 30–50 g of fresh ginger.
Is GIMBER's sugar really a problem?
GIMBER lists rietsuiker as the 2nd ingredient (~35 g/100 ml). In SLE, this glycemic load activates RAGE, amplifies NETs, and stimulates NF-κB—exactly what we want to avoid.
