Pollution in Belgium: a public health issue
According to the European Environment Agency (EEA, 2023), Belgium is one of the Western European countries most affected by fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and NOx pollution. The cities of Brussels, Liège, and Antwerp regularly exceed WHO recommended thresholds (5 µg/m³ annually for PM2.5). Chronic exposure to PM2.5 generates:

PM2.5 + sugar: double inhibition of Nrf2
1. How PM2.5 depletes Nrf2
Nrf2 (Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2) is the master regulator of cellular antioxidant defense. Normally, Keap1 sequesters Nrf2 in the cytoplasm. During oxidative stress, Keap1 is oxidized → Nrf2 is released → nucleus → activation of GST, NQO1, HO-1, SOD, catalase. PM2.5 generate such an intense flux of ROS that they chronically deplete Nrf2 and Keap1, leaving cells unprotected.
2. Sugar inhibits Nrf2 via IKKβ
Hyperglycemia activates IKKβ (which phosphorylates IκB → NF-κB activation). This same IKKβ phosphorylates Keap1 differently, keeping Nrf2 sequestered and inactive. Result: people who drink a lot of sugary drinks in a polluted environment accumulate a double inhibition of Nrf2 — the most dangerous combination for pulmonary and cardiovascular health.
3. 6-gingerol: Nrf2 activator via Keap1
6-gingerol is an electrophilic activator of Nrf2: it covalently reacts with cysteine residues of Keap1 (C151, C273, C288), releasing Nrf2 for nuclear translocation. In pulmonary epithelial cells exposed to PM2.5, pretreatment with 6-gingerol restores HO-1, NQO1, and GSH production (Li et al., Free Radic Biol Med 2019; Yao et al., Environ Pollut 2021).
4. Anti-atherosclerosis and cardiovascular protection
Chronic exposure to PM2.5 accelerates atherosclerosis via LDL oxidation, NF-κB activation in the endothelium, and platelet activation. Ginger inhibits LDL oxidation, reduces platelet aggregation (TXA₂↓), and improves endothelial function (NO↑) — direct cardiovascular support against the effects of pollution.

❓ FAQ — Pollution and ginger
Can ginger "detoxify" the body from PM2.5?
Not literally — PM2.5 are physical particles that cannot be chemically "eliminated." But ginger strengthens antioxidant defenses (Nrf2) which repair damage caused by these particles, and reduces the inflammation they generate.
What is the difference between INTI and an N-acetylcysteine (NAC) supplement often recommended in polluted areas?
