🔬 How sodas make you age faster
1. Fructose and mitochondrial stress
Fructose is metabolized almost exclusively in the liver via fructokinase (Khk) — a process that massively consumes hepatic ATP and generates uric acid (via AMP degradation). This mitochondrial overload produces an excess of ROS (reactive oxygen species):
- Superoxide (O₂•⁻) → damages membrane lipids (lipid peroxidation)

- SOD (superoxide dismutase) → neutralizes O₂•⁻
- Catalase → degrades H₂O₂
- GPx (glutathione peroxidase) → protects membrane lipids
- HO-1 (heme oxygenase-1) → anti-inflammatory ginger, anti-apoptotic
- NQO1 → turmeric-liver-cleansing-sugar-free-2026">detoxification of quinones and electrophiles
Anti-glycation: AGE brake
6-gingerol and 6-shogaol trap methylglyoxal (MGO) — the most reactive AGE precursor — via "carbonyl trapping": formation of inert gingerol-MGO adducts that do not glycate proteins. In addition, ginger increases glyoxalase-1 (Glo-1) — the enzyme that detoxifies MGO before it forms AGEs.
Curcumin (in INTI): telomere extender
Curcumin inhibits NF-κB in stem cells — a mechanism that reduces chronic cellular inflammation that shortens telomeres. In vitro studies show that curcumin can reactivate telomerase in certain cell lines, potentially slowing telomere shortening.
