The myth of orange juice for immunity
The belief "orange juice = vitamin C = immunity" is one of the most deeply rooted in popular nutrition. But the analysis is more nuanced:
- Vitamin C in pasteurized juice: a Tropicana juice advertised at 60mg Vit C/100ml indeed contains this amount at bottling. After 4 weeks on the shelf, studies show a 40-60% loss due to oxidation. At consumption: ~24-36mg effective.
- Competing sugar: 9-11g of sugar/100ml create a glycemic peak → excess glucose inhibits vitamin C uptake by leukocytes (competition via GLUT transporters)
- Pasteurization: destroys the enzymes and polyphenols of the orange → the complex nutritional matrix of fresh orange no longer exists
- Free fructose: without the fibrous matrix → ginger and metabolism liver-protection-hepatique-nash">weight loss studies accelerated hepatic → pro-inflammatory → counterproductive for immunity
What gingerol does to your immune system
INTI's gingerol acts on immunity through several mechanisms that vitamin C alone does not cover:
- Activation of NK (Natural Killer) cells: gingerol increases the cytotoxic activity of NK cells against virus-infected cells → first-line antiviral defense
- NF-κB immune modulation: NF-κB is both excessively pro-inflammatory AND necessary for the immune response. Gingerol modulates (not suppresses) → balanced immunity
- Reduction of excessive TNF-α and IL-6: in infections, excessive "cytokine storm" worsens symptoms → gingerol modulates TNF-α and IL-6 without inhibiting the antiviral response
- Direct antimicrobial activity: gingerol and shogaol have shown antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, and inhibition of influenza neuraminidase (Denyer et al.)
Winter immunity comparison: juice vs INTI
| Immunity criterion | Orange juice 200ml | INTI 100ml |
|---|---|---|
| Effective Vitamin C | ~48-72mg (after losses) | Gingerol (alternative pathway) |
| Sugar | 18-22g (inhibits Vit C uptake) | <4g natural |
| NK cells activation | Not documented | Yes (gingerol) |
| NF-κB modulated | No | Yes (IC₅₀=15µM) |
| TNF-α modulated | No | Yes |
| Direct antiviral activity | Not documented | Neuraminidase inhibited |
INTI winter immunity protocol
- Daily: 1 INTI shot in the morning on an empty stomach (NK cells activation + NF-κB modulated)
- First signs of a cold: 2 INTI shots/day (morning + evening) + hot water + lemon + honey
- Complementary diet: zinc (oysters, seeds), vitamin D (sunlight or supplement in Belgian winter), probiotics
Note: INTI is not a medicine and does not replace medical treatment. Consult a professional in case of severe infection.
FAQ — Winter immunity with INTI
Should I also take vitamin C in addition to INTI? Vitamin C is useful — not in sugary pasteurized juice but as a supplement or via whole oranges. INTI and vitamin C are complementary, not exclusive.
How quickly does INTI boost immunity? Anti-inflammatory effects appear quickly (a few hours for NF-κB). Effects on NK cells are measurable after 2-4 weeks of regular consumption.
Can INTI help in case of confirmed flu? As support: yes. Not as an exclusive treatment. The inhibition of neuraminidase by gingerol is interesting but does not have the power of a medicinal antiviral.
