The myth of "healthy" and "natural" fruit juice
Tropicana, Innocent, Joker, Granini... All these brands sell their juice under the label "no added sugar" or "100% pure juice". And it's true: technically, no sugar is added. But the biochemical reality is different — and the health consequences are similar to those of a soda.
Tropicana vs Coca-Cola: the shocking comparison
| Parameter | Tropicana pure juice | Coca-Cola | INTI ginger |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sugar/100ml | 9.8g | 10.6g | <4g |
| Free fructose/100ml | ~4.9g | ~5.5g | <2g |
| Glycemic index | 50-60 | 63 | <30 |
| Fibers | ~0.2g (traces) | 0g | Present |
| "Added" sugar declared | No | Yes (HFCS) | No |
| Active gingerols | None | None | Yes (carefully prepared) |
Why "no added sugar" does not mean "low in sugar"
European regulations allow the label "no added sugars" if the drink does not contain added extrinsic sugars. But the intrinsic fructose of a squeezed orange remains fructose: once the juice is extracted without the pulp fiber, it is biochemically identical to the glucose-fructose syrup of a soda for your liver-protection-hepatique-nash">liver.
Fiber: the real difference between a fruit and its juice
A whole orange contains ~2.4g of fiber per 100g, which slows down intestinal absorption of fructose, reduces the rate of diffusion to the hepatic portal vein, and activates intestinal satiety receptors (GLP-1, CCK). Squeezing an orange destroys this protection. Eating 3 whole oranges is nutritionally very different from drinking a glass of Tropicana equivalent.
Hepatic fructose load: Tropicana vs INTI
A 200ml glass of Tropicana → ~9.8g of free fructose reaching the liver → ChREBP activation → de novo lipogenesis → cholesterol-ldl-reduire-naturellement">hepatic triglycerides. Repeated every morning for 5 years, this "healthy" glass of juice significantly contributes to the risk of fatty liver (NAFLD).
INTI carefully prepared retains the natural fibers of ginger and contains less than 2g of fructose/100ml — with the added bonus of gingerols which inhibit hepatic ChREBP.
The health marketing of juices: what the labels don't say
- "Source of vitamin C": true, but 200ml of Tropicana = 9.8g of sugar for ~80mg of vitamin C. You can get this vitamin C in other ways without the sugar load.
- "100% fruit": true, but the matrix context of the whole fruit (fibers, enzymes, chewing time) is absent in the juice.
- "Freshly squeezed": often a reconstruction from reconstituted concentrate with added flavorings (Tropicana = reconstituted concentrate + flavorings in several references).
FAQ — INTI vs Tropicana and fruit juices Belgium
Is freshly squeezed orange juice better than Tropicana?
Slightly (no concentrate, intact enzymes), but the fructose load remains identical and fibers are absent. INTI remains a much better option for metabolic health.
Can Tropicana be given to children as a healthy drink?
In moderation. The WHO recommends not exceeding 150ml of juice per day for children. A standard 250ml glass of Tropicana exceeds this recommendation and provides as much sugar as a small soda.
Does INTI contain vitamin C like orange juice?
INTI is rich in antioxidants (ginger polyphenols) but not specifically in vitamin C. For vitamin C, eat whole fruits rather than drinking them.
INTI vs GIMBER ginger elixir comparison, is it similar to Tropicana in terms of sugar?
GIMBER is much sweeter than Tropicana: ~35g/100ml vs 9.8g. INTI (<4g) is the only truly low-sugar option among Belgian ginger elixirs.
