The problem with conventional ginger

Pesticides

Imported conventional ginger may contain pesticide residues (fungicides, insecticides). An EFSA study (2019) found residues exceeding MRLs in 2-4% of imported ginger samples.

Post-harvest fumigation

Imported ginger is often fumigated with methyl bromide or hydrogen phosphide for preservation during transport. These treatments are prohibited in organic farming.

Sulfur bleaching

Some gingers are bleached with sulfur dioxide to improve the appearance. Prohibited in organic.
