Ginger vs ibuprofen: natural vs drug comparison
Ginger vs. Ibuprofen: What the Science Says
Clinical studies directly compare ginger to ibuprofen. The results are surprising.
Comparative studies
Ozgoli et al. (2009) — Dysmenorrhea: ginger (250mg 4x/d) = ibuprofen (400mg 4x/d) on pain reduction, with fewer GI side effects for ginger.
Haghighi et al. (2005) — Knee osteoarthritis: ginger vs ibuprofen vs placebo → comparable effectiveness on pain and function.
Common mechanism: COX-2
Both ibuprofen and ginger inhibit COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2), the key enzyme in the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. Ginger also inhibits 5-LOX — something ibuprofen does not do.
Important differences
| Criterion | Ginger INTI | Ibuprofen |
|---|---|---|
| Effectiveness (mild-moderate) | Comparable | Comparable |
| Stomach | Gastro-protective | Gastro-irritant |
| Cardiovascular | Neutral/beneficial | Long-term risk |
| Daily use | Safe | Not recommended |
| Pregnancy | Generally OK (consult) | Contraindicated T3 |
Important: For severe pain or chronic illnesses, consult a doctor. Ginger is an alternative for mild to moderate daily pain.
