Ginger and Blood Pressure: Hypotensive Effect, Studies and Dosage
Hypertension affects 1 in 3 Belgian adults. Ginger acts on blood pressure by three mechanisms: NO-dependent vasodilation, blocking of calcium channels and natural diuretic effect. Analysis of scientific evidence.
🔬 Triple hypotensive mechanism
1. NO-dependent vasodilation
6-gingerol stimulates the production ofnitric oxide (NO) by endothelial cells. NO relaxes vascular smooth muscle, dilating blood vessels and reducing peripheral resistance — which lowers blood pressure.
2. Blockage of calcium channels
Like antihypertensive drugs in the calcium channel blocker class (amlodipine, nifedipine), ginger blocks the entry of calcium into the smooth muscle cells of the arteries. Less calcium = less contraction = more relaxed vessel.
3. Inhibition of enzyme converting enzyme (ACE)
Ginger partially inhibitsangiotensin converting enzyme — the same mechanism as IEC drugs (captopril, enalapril). Angiotensin II is a powerful vasoconstrictor; by reducing its production, blood pressure decreases.
📊 What the studies say
A 2019 meta-analysis (6 trials, 345 participants) showed that ginger supplementation for 8-12 weeks reduced:
- Systolic pressure : −6.36 mmHg (p < 0.001)
- Diastolic pressure : −2.12 mmHg (p = 0.03)
The best results were observed in subjects under 50 years of age taking ≥3g ginger/day for ≥8 weeks.
🍬 Why sugar makes high blood pressure worse
Added sugar is an underestimated factor in hypertension. It activates the sympathetic nervous system and increases sodium retention. This is why a shot of ginger high in sugar is counterproductive for blood pressure. INTI contains 1.1g of sugar per shot — as opposed to the 34g/100ml of some competitors.
⚡ Turmeric + Black Pepper: additional vascular benefit
Curcumin improves endothelial function and reduces arterial stiffness. Black pepper (piperine) potentiates its absorption. INTI combines organic ginger + turmeric + black pepper for a triple vascular effect.
⚠️ Hypertension precautions
Ginger does not replace prescribed antihypertensive medications. Be careful of interactions: ginger can potentiate the effect of hypotensive and anticoagulant medications. Consult your doctor if you are taking treatment for hypertension.
❓ FAQ — Ginger and Tension
Does ginger raise or lower blood pressure?
Ginger lowers blood pressure. It acts by vasodilation (production of NO), blockade of calcium channels and partial inhibition of ACE. Clinical studies show an average reduction of 6 mmHg in systolic after 8 weeks of daily intake.
Can you take ginger with blood pressure medication?
Ginger may potentiate the effect of antihypertensive drugs, which could cause hypotension. Consult your doctor before combining ginger and antihypertensive treatment. Regular blood pressure monitoring is recommended.
