Ginger for chemotherapy-induced nausea: the clinical evidence
Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) affects 70-80% of cancer patients. Ginger is the most studied natural antiemetic.
The evidence
- Meta-analysis (2018) — ginger significantly reduces acute CINV when combined with standard antiemetics
- Anticipatory nausea — the psychological nausea before treatment; ginger helps
- Delayed nausea — days 2-5 after chemo; often undertreated; ginger fills the gap
- No drug interactions — safe with most chemotherapy protocols (verify with oncologist)
How it works
- 5-HT3 antagonism — same mechanism as ondansetron (Zofran)
- NK1 modulation — similar pathway to aprepitant (Emend)
- Gastric motility — prevents gastroparesis
Sugar and cancer
Cancer cells consume glucose at 10-50× the rate of normal cells (Warburg effect). Zero sugar is especially important during treatment.
Important
Complementary to prescribed antiemetics. Never replace medical treatment. Start 3 days before chemo cycle. Consult your oncologist.
INTI — ginger + turmeric + black pepper, zero sugar. Supportive care during treatment.
