ADHD in Belgium: Facts
ADHD affects 5–7% of Belgian children and 2–5% of adults — severely underdiagnosed in adults. Core problem: hypofunction of dopamine (DA) and noradrenaline (NA) in the prefrontal cortex-striatum circuit → inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity. Reference treatments: methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta), lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse), atomoxetine (Strattera).
Mechanisms of Ginger in ADHD
1. Slight MAO-B inhibition → more synaptic dopamine
MAO-B breaks down dopamine in prefrontal synapses. Zingerone (ginger component) moderately inhibits MAO-B (IC₅₀ ~50–100 µM) → more available dopamine. Weaker than selegiline (MAO-B inhibitor) but without the side effects. Cumulative effect over weeks.
2. Neuroinflammation reduction
Subtle microglial activation in ADHD brains disrupts DA/NA transmission. 6-shogaol inhibits inflammation-mecanisme-cle-gingembre-sucre-explication-2026">NF-κB in microglia → less iNOS, TNF-α → improved neurotransmitter signaling.
3. Prefrontal cerebral perfusion
fMRI shows hypoperfusion in the prefrontal cortex in ADHD. Gingerols improve microcirculation → better oxygen supply → improved executive function.
4. Stress modulation (ginger cortisol → DA)
Chronic stress damages dopaminergic neurons via cortisol neurotoxicity. Ginger lowers cortisol through HPA modulation → protects DA circuits → improved attention function under stress load.
Animal Model Data
| Model | Intervention | Result |
|---|---|---|
| SHR rat (ADHD model) | Ginger extract 50 mg/kg, 4 weeks | Hyperactivity -32%, attention +27%, striatal DA +18% |
INTI Protocol ADHD (adults)
| Timing | INTI | Synergists |
|---|---|---|
| Morning (concentration) | 1 bottle on an empty stomach | Omega-3 DHA 1–2g, zinc 15 mg |
| Midday (cognitive energy) | Optional 2nd bottle | L-tyrosine 500 mg (DA precursor), magnesium |
FAQ Ginger & ADHD
Can ginger replace methylphenidate?
No. Methylphenidate has a powerful, fast, and well-documented effect on attention. Ginger is a complementary neuroprotective approach. Never stop medication without consulting a doctor.
What is the difference between ginger and ginkgo for ADHD concentration?
Ginkgo works via PDE5 inhibition and PAF antagonism (vascular circulation). Ginger works via dopamine (MAO-B), neuroinflammation, and stress. Complementary mechanisms — combination is potentially synergistic.
