Mechanisms of action of ginger on lipids
1. HMG-CoA reductase inhibition (statin-like)
6-gingerol inhibits HMG-CoA reductase with an IC50 of 9.5 µg/mL. Effect ~3000× less potent than statins but without myopathy or rhabdomyolysis risk.
2. Reduced intestinal cholesterol absorption
Ginger reduces pancreatic lipase activity and partially inhibits the NPC1L1 transporter → less cholesterol absorbed → more fecal excretion.
3. Reduction of LDL peroxidation
Ginger antioxidants reduce LDL oxidation by -28%. Oxidized LDL is atherogenic, not native LDL.

Is there an interaction between ginger and statins?
Slight CYP3A4 inhibition is possible → slight increase in statin levels (simvastatin, atorvastatin). Monitor for muscle pain (sign of myopathy). Pravastatin (not via CYP3A4) = no interaction.
