Why combine ginger and turmeric?
Ginger and turmeric belong to the same botanical family (Zingiberaceae) and have co-evolved for centuries in Asian traditional medicine — Ayurveda, TCM, and Unani medicine systematically use both together. This co-administration is now scientifically justified by their complementary and synergistic mechanisms.
Complementary Mechanisms
Ginger (gingerols, shogaols)
- COX-2 inhibition → PGE2↓, TXA2↓
- 5-LOX inhibition → LTB4↓ (pro-inflammatory leukotrienes)
- NF-κB modulation (modest)
- Antioxidant Nrf2/HO-1
- 5-HT3 antagonism (nausea, spasms)
Turmeric (curcumin)
- Potent NF-κB inhibition (main pathway)
- AP-1 inhibition (secondary inflammatory pathway)
- Caspase-3 activation (tumor apoptosis)
- STAT3 inhibition (oncogene)
- Direct ROS antioxidant
Proven Synergy
Simultaneous inhibition of NF-κB (curcumin) AND COX-2 (gingerols) blocks inflammation at two different levels of the cascade. In vitro studies show a synergistic (>additive) effect on tumor cell apoptosis and reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines when both are combined.
The bioavailability problem of curcumin
Curcumin alone is very poorly absorbed (1–3%). Piperine (black pepper) is the standard enhancer (+2000%). But ginger also contributes:
- Accelerated gastric emptying → faster passage to the small intestine → less gastric acid degradation
- Slight CYP3A4 inhibition → reduction of curcumin's first-pass metabolism
Practical combination: ginger + curcumin + piperine = maximum curcumin bioavailability.
Indications where the combination is particularly useful
- ginger osteoarthritis: COX-2 (ginger) + NF-κB (curcumin) → double joint protection
- Gut health: Intestinal NF-κB (curcumin) + 5-HT3 (ginger) → inflammation + spasms treated
- Systemic chronic inflammation: CRP↓↓ more pronounced in combination than in monotherapy
Frequently Asked Questions
INTI Turmeric vs. INTI Original: which to choose?
INTI Original: perfect for gut health, daily moderate anti-inflammation, ginger and sport, ginger immunity. INTI Turmeric: for more serious inflammation (osteoarthritis, chronic conditions), or for those seeking maximum anti-NF-κB power. Both are complementary.
Can I take INTI + separate curcumin supplement?
Yes, even recommended for serious conditions (severe osteoarthritis, IBD, etc.). INTI provides cold-pressed ginger + its curcumin; a standardized curcumin supplement (95% curcuminoids + piperine) provides a therapeutic curcumin dose.
INTI Turmeric — Ultimate Anti-Inflammation
NF-κB + COX-2 simultaneously inhibited. The synergy that nature created, INTI perfected it.
