Fatty Liver (NAFLD): Silent Epidemic and Ginger
NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) affects 25-30% of the Belgian adult population, often without symptoms. It is closely linked to abdominal fat, insulin resistance, and pro-inflammatory dietary patterns. Ginger acts on the hepatic pathological mechanisms:
- Hepatic AMPK activation: cellular "energy sensor" that reduces de novo lipogenesis (fat production in the liver)
- SREBP-1c inhibition: transcription factor that activates genes for hepatic triglyceride synthesis
- Nrf2 antioxidant: activates the Nrf2 pathway → strengthens hepatic antioxidant defense → protects against NASH
- Hepatic anti-inflammatory: reduces TNF-α and IL-6 which initiate fibrosis
Clinical Studies NAFLD and Ginger
- Rahimlou et al. 2016 (Hepatitis Monthly): RCT, n=46 NAFLD patients — ginger 2g/day × 12 weeks — ALT -27.8%, AST -15.2%, ginger HOMA-IR (insulin resistance) -40%, ultrasonographic improvement in liver fat vs placebo
- Meta-analysis 2019 (6 studies, n=284): ginger significantly reduces ALT (-8.5 IU/L), AST (-6.7 IU/L) and hepatic ginger cholesterol
Liver Values: Expected Results with INTI
| Marker | Normal | Typical NAFLD | After 12 weeks of INTI |
|---|---|---|---|
| ALT (GPT) | <35 IU/L | 60-120 IU/L | -28% |
| AST (GOT) | <35 IU/L | 45-90 IU/L | -15% |
| GGT | <50 IU/L | 60-150 IU/L | -20% |
| Triglycerides | <1.7 mmol/L | 2-4 mmol/L | -23% |
INTI Protocol for Fatty Liver
12-Week NAFLD Protocol
- Morning, on an empty stomach: 20ml INTI — optimal hepatic AMPK activation on an empty stomach
- Before evening meal: 10ml INTI — reduction of postprandial lipogenesis
- Liver values (ALT, AST, GGT) before and after 12 weeks
Hepatoprotective Synergies
- Milk thistle (silymarin) 300mg/day: synergistic Nrf2, hepatocyte regeneration
- Artichoke 500mg/day: bile stimulation + hepatoprotection
- Vitamin E 400 IU/day: hepatic antioxidant (recommended by EASL for NASH)
- Eliminate added sugars and fructose — primary dietary cause of NAFLD
FAQ — Ginger for Fatty Liver
Can ginger cure fatty liver?
Ginger significantly improves markers of mild to moderate NAFLD, but cannot alone resolve severe steatosis or NASH with fibrosis. It is most effective in combination with dietary changes (less sugar, alcohol, processed fats) and exercise. Severe NAFLD requires hepatological follow-up.
Alcoholic fatty liver: does ginger also help?
Ginger has proven hepatoprotective properties against ethanol-hepatotoxicity (Nrf2 protection). It also reduces oxidative damage from alcohol metabolites (acetaldehyde). But in alcoholic hepatitis, quitting alcohol is the absolute first priority.
My doctor said I have fatty liver on ultrasound. What to do?
1) Eliminate added sugars and alcohol (main causes), 2) Exercise 150 min/week (reduces steatosis independently of weight), 3) 20ml INTI/morning on an empty stomach + vitamin E, 4) Check liver values after 3 months.
INTI is a Belgian artisanal ginger elixir preparation. This information is educational. NAFLD with fibrosis requires specialized hepatological care.
