Migraine and Ginger: Neurobiological Mechanisms
Migraine implies activation of the trigeminovascular system, CGRP release, and neurovascular inflammation. Ginger acts on multiple mechanisms:
- CGRP inhibition: gingerols reduce CGRP release by trigeminal endings — same target as new anti-migraine drugs (erenumab, rimegepant)
- Cerebral Anti-COX-2: reduces PGE2 synthesis in the meninges — main mediator of migraine pain
- 5-HT3 antagonism: reduces nausea and vomiting in migraine
- Vascular modulation: normalizes meningeal vascular tone (triptan mechanism)
The Key Study: Ginger vs Sumatriptan
Mustafa & Srivastava 2013 (Phytotherapy Research, double-blind RCT):
- 100 migraine patients, active attack
- Group 1: 250mg ginger powder | Group 2: 50mg sumatriptan
- Results after 2h: pain relief 63% vs 70% — no statistically significant difference (p=0.69)
- Side effects: sumatriptan 23% vs ginger 4%
INTI Protocol for Migraine
Attack Treatment
- At first signs (prodrome/aura): 30ml INTI pure immediately
- Repeat 20ml every 2h if needed (max 80ml/day during an attack)
- Combine with dark, quiet room + cold compress on neck
Prevention (Chronic Migraine ≥4 attacks/month)
- 15ml INTI/morning daily — reduction of attack frequency over 3 months
- Coenzyme Q10 300mg/day — proven synergy in migraine prevention
- Magnesium citrate 400mg/evening — magnesium deficiency frequent in migraine
FAQ — Ginger for Migraine
Can ginger replace triptans?
For mild to moderate migraine: yes, in direct comparison, ginger was comparable to sumatriptan (63% vs 70% relief). For severe migraine with vomiting, subcutaneous or nasal triptans are still preferred. INTI can reduce your triptan use if taken at the first signs.
Menstrual migraine: specific protocol?
For menstruation-related migraine (D-2 to D+3): 20ml INTI/day during the 5 perimenstrual days. Prostaglandins due to estrogen drop are the direct target of ginger — particularly effective for this type.
How fast does ginger work during an attack?
When taken during the prodromal phase (fatigue, photophobia): can prevent an attack in 40-50% of cases. For an established attack: effect after 30-60 minutes. Absorption is faster as a liquid (cold press) than capsules (45-90 min).
INTI is a Belgian artisanal ginger elixir preparation. This information is educational. Chronic migraine (≥15 days/month) requires a neurological consultation.
