Why alcohol is toxic to the liver
Ethanol is metabolized by the liver in two steps:
- Ethanol → Acetaldehyde (via ADH) — acetaldehyde is the main toxin, responsible for nausea, headaches and liver damage.
- Acetaldehyde → Acetate (via ALDH) — acetate is harmless and eliminated by the lungs and kidneys
Hangovers occur when acetaldehyde accumulates faster than it can be eliminated.
How ginger intervenes
1. Induction of ADH and ALDH
Gingerols induce the expression of ADH and ALDH enzymes, accelerating the breakdown of ethanol and acetaldehyde. A study (Abdel-Aziz 2013) shows that ginger increases ADH activity by 40% in alcohol-treated rats.
2. Hepatic antioxidant protection
Alcohol generates massive oxidative stress in liver cells (hepatocytes). Ginger increases hepatic superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, neutralizing free radicals generated by ethanol.
3. Reduction of hepatic inflammation
Alcohol activates hepatic NF-kB, triggering an inflammatory cascade. Ginger inhibits this mechanism, reducing hepatic TNF-alpha and long-term fibrosis.
4. Reduction of alcoholic nausea
As with ginger and ginger and pregnancy-remede-naturel">ginger pregnancy, ginger is a powerful antiemetic - it acts on the same 5-HT3 receptors as ondansetron, reducing next-day nausea.
When to take INTI when consuming alcohol?
| Time | Action | INTI Dose |
|---|---|---|
| Before the evening (30 min) | Prepare liver enzymes | 20ml + water |
| During (between drinks) | Anti-nausea buffer, bloating-reflux-nausees">ginger and digestion | 10-15ml diluted |
| Before sleeping | Accelerate nocturnal metabolism | 20ml + large glass of water |
| Next morning | Anti-nausea, liver, energy | 20-30ml diluted |
Ginger = license to drink more?
Ginger reduces the harmful effects of alcohol but does not eliminate them. It does not allow you to drink more "without risk". Excessive alcohol consumption remains dangerous for the liver, brain, and cardiovascular system, regardless of ginger.
In summary
- Accelerates ethanol degradation via ADH/ALDH induction (+40%)
- Protects hepatocytes from alcoholic oxidative stress
- Reduces hepatic inflammation (NF-kB, TNF-alpha)
- Powerful antiemetic for next-day nausea
- Best protocol: 20ml before + 20ml before sleeping + 20ml the next day
FAQ
Can INTI replace water to reduce hangovers?
No — hydration remains essential. Alcohol is a diuretic and dehydration is a major cause of hangovers. Taking INTI with a large glass of water is optimal.
Does ginger help with chronic alcoholic hepatitis?
Animal studies are promising, but for confirmed liver disease, the only real solution is to stop or reduce alcohol + medical follow-up.
