The hangover: multiple mechanisms
"Veisalgia" (hangover) results from: (1) dehydration and electrolyte loss (alcoholic diuresis), (2) accumulation of acetaldehyde (toxic metabolite of ethanol, 10–30× more toxic), (3) systemic inflammation (bacterial LPS passes the alcohol-permeabilized intestinal barrier), (4) hypoglycemia (alcohol inhibits hepatic gluconeogenesis), (5) disruption of ginger and sleep-insomnia-quality-recovery">sleep (REM suppression). This leads to nausea, headaches and fatigue.
Ginger's anti-hangover mechanisms
1. Anti-nausea and digestive
Acetaldehyde stimulates the release of intestinal serotonin (5-HT), which activates 5-HT3 receptors of the vagus and splanchnic nerves — triggering nausea and vomiting. Ginger is a 5-HT3 antagonist and accelerates gastric emptying delayed by alcohol — a direct anti-emetic combination. Taking INTI in the morning is more effective than after emesis (too late).
2. Elimination of acetaldehyde
Acetaldehyde is produced by hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and broken down by aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2) into harmless acetate. Ginger stimulates ALDH2 activity and increases hepatic glutathione — accelerating the breakdown of acetaldehyde and shortening the toxic phase of a hangover.
3. Reduction of post-alcohol systemic inflammation
Alcohol increases intestinal permeability → translocation of bacterial LPS → TLR4 activation → NF-κB → IL-6, TNF-α (responsible for headaches and fatigue). Ginger inhibits NF-κB and TLR4 activation — reducing this inflammatory component.
4. Glycemic stabilization
Post-alcoholic hypoglycemia (tremors, sweating, ginger dizziness) results from hepatic inhibition of gluconeogenesis by ethanol. The INTI (hepatic AMPK active) + simple glucose (juice, fruit) combination in the morning restores blood sugar more quickly.
INTI post-alcohol recovery protocol
| Timing | Action | Objective |
|---|---|---|
| Before bed (after party) | 1 INTI bottle + large glass of water | Start acetaldehyde elimination during sleep |
| Upon waking | 1 INTI bottle + coconut water (electrolytes) | Anti-nausea, rehydration, ALDH2 stimulation |
| 30 min after | Light meal (eggs, toast, banana) | Glucose + cysteine (glutathione) + potassium |
Before a party (preventive protection)
- 1 INTI bottle 30 min before starting to drink
- Water between each alcoholic drink
- No sugary mixed drinks (fructose + alcohol = acetaldehyde accumulation)
"I always keep an INTI in the fridge for the morning after a party. In the morning with coconut water, the nausea goes away in 30 minutes and I recover much faster." — Kevin, 28, Ghent
Ginger & Hangover FAQ
Is INTI more effective before or after drinking for a hangover?
Both. Before: hepatoprotective pre-load (glutathione ↑, ALDH2 activated). After (before bed): accelerates acetaldehyde elimination during sleep. In the morning: anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory. Triple utility.
Does INTI contain sugars that worsen a hangover?
INTI cold press contains ~2g of natural carbohydrates (fresh ginger, lemon). No added sugars. This very low level does not worsen a hangover. Avoid sugary juices and sodas, which do worsen acetaldehyde accumulation.
Does ginger protect the liver against chronic alcohol?
For chronic consumption: ginger has documented hepatoprotective effects (reduces alcoholic ginger steatosis in animal models via Nrf2 + ALDH2). But the most effective protection remains reducing alcohol consumption.
