Ginger provides multifactorial cardiovascular protection: reduction of LDL cholesterol (-10-15%), decrease in triglycerides, antithrombotic effect, and slight vasodilation. Its use in integrative cardiology is growing but requires precautions in cases of anticoagulant treatment.
Cardioprotective mechanisms of ginger
| Action | Active compound | Cardiovascular benefit |
|---|---|---|
| ↓ LDL-cholesterol | Gingerdiones | -10 to -15% over 12 weeks |
| ↓ Triglycerides | 6-gingerol | -17% (2019 meta-analysis) |
| Antithrombotic | 6-shogaol | ↓ platelet aggregation (comparable to low-dose aspirin) |
| Vasodilation | Zingerone | ↓ peripheral resistance → ↓ blood pressure |
| LDL Anti-oxidant | Polyphenols | ↓ LDL oxidation (key step in atherosclerosis) |
Ginger and arrhythmia
Preclinical studies (2021-2023) show that gingerols possess mild antiarrhythmic properties via partial inhibition of cardiac ion channels (Na+ and K+). No human clinical trials on established arrhythmia. Absolute precaution: do not use ginger in high doses in cases of treated atrial fibrillation — interactions with antiarrhythmics (amiodarone, flecainide) are theoretically possible.
Ginger and heart failure
Heart failure involves chronic natural anti-inflammatory and myocardial oxidative stress. Ginger could theoretically benefit via its anti-inflammatory pathways, but no clinical trials are available on this subject. In decompensated heart failure, always consult a cardiologist before any supplementation.
Interactions with cardiac medications
- Warfarin/Acenocoumarol: ginger potentiates anticoagulation → hemorrhagic risk. Monitor INR if ginger is added.
- Low-dose aspirin: additive antiplatelet effect — generally well tolerated but inform your cardiologist
- Statins: no documented interaction — possible synergy (complementary effects on LDL)
- Antihypertensives: slight potentiation possible — monitor blood pressure at the start of supplementation
