Ginger and osteoporosis: imbalance between bone formation and resorption
Bone is a living tissue in constant remodeling. Osteoporosis occurs when resorption (osteoclasts) exceeds formation (osteoblasts):
- After menopause (loss of protective estrogen): -3-5%/year in the first few years
- With age (osteoblast senescence)
- With long-term corticosteroids
- In case of calcium/vitamin D deficiency
Mechanisms of ginger on bone
1. Inhibition of osteoclasts (resorption)
6-gingerol inhibits the RANKL/RANK pathway, which activates osteoclasts, reducing bone resorption. This pathway is the target of anti-resorptive drugs (bisphosphonates, denosumab).
2. Stimulation of osteoblasts (formation)
Ginger activates BMP-2 (bone morphogenetic protein 2), a growth factor that stimulates the differentiation of stem cells into osteoblasts and the synthesis of bone collagen.
3. Reduction of peri-osseous inflammation
Chronic inflammation activates osteoclasts via IL-1beta, IL-6, and TNF-alpha. The anti-inflammatory-science-utilisation">anti-inflammatory action of ginger indirectly protects bones.
4. Mild estrogenic properties (phytoestrogens)
Ginger contains phytoestrogens (zingerone) which can partially mimic the protective action of estrogen on bone — relevant for menopausal women.
Available data
| Study | Result |
|---|---|
| Habib 2008 (menopausal rat) | Bone density +18%, bone Ca +22% |
| Sekiya 2010 (in vitro) | RANKL inhibited -40%, osteoclast formation reduced |
| BMP-2 activated (several studies) | Osteoblastogenesis stimulated |
INTI protocol for bone health
- 15-20ml INTI/day (anti-inflammatory + osteoclast inhibition)
- Essential to combine with: Calcium (1000-1200mg/day) + Vitamin D3 (2000 IU/day)
- Weight-bearing physical activity (walking, dancing, strength training): stimulates bone formation
- Avoid: tobacco, excessive alcohol-proteger-gingembre-lendemain-fete-2026">alcohol (reduce bone formation)
In summary
- Inhibits osteoclasts via RANKL (-40%) → reduces bone resorption
- Stimulates osteoblasts via BMP-2 → increases bone formation
- Bone density +18% in menopausal animal model
- Phytoestrogenic properties (zingerone)
- 15-20ml INTI/day + calcium + vitamin D3 + impact ginger and sport
