Ginger and prostate: cancer, benign hypertrophy and anti-androgenic effects

Ginger reduces prostate cancer cell growth and decreases symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH): a landmark preclinical study (Kim et al., 2012, British Journal of Nutrition) on LNCaP cells and murine models shows a 56% inhibition of prostate tumor growth with 500 mg/kg of ginger extract for 8 weeks. The mechanisms are multiple.

Ginger and prostate cancer: what the research says

Prostate cancer is androgen-dependent: tumor cells use testosterone and DHT (dihydrotestosterone) to proliferate. Ginger acts on several fronts:

  • Tumor apoptosis: 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) of LNCaP and PC-3 cells in vitro.
  • Anti-androgen: certain ginger compounds inhibit the androgen receptor (AR), similar to enzalutamide but with much lower potency.
  • Anti-angiogenic: inhibition of VEGF (vascular growth factor) → less tumor vascularization.
  • Anti-inflammatory ginger: reduction of the pro-tumoral microenvironment (NF-κB, COX-2).

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and ginger

BPH is a non-cancerous proliferation of the prostate affecting 50% of men aged 51-60. Conventional medications (tamsulosin, finasteride) have significant sexual side effects. Ginger offers a complementary alternative:

Effect on prostate Active compound Measured result
↓ prostatic cell growth Gingerols -28% proliferation (in vitro, 2023)
↓ local DHT Zingerone Partial inhibition of 5α-reductase
↓ prostatic 6-shogaol ↓ IL-8, TNF-α in prostatic tissue

Dosage and duration

Relevant studies use 250-500 mg of standardized extract/day. For BPH, regular consumption over 3-6 months seems necessary for measurable effects on urinary symptoms. INTI Drink provides a standardized dose of active gingerols with 1 shot/day (zero sugar, 1.19g/100ml).

Important precautions

  • DO NOT substitute for medical treatment in case of diagnosed prostate cancer.
  • In case of elevated PSA: urological assessment before any self-supplementation.
  • Possible interaction with medicinal anti-androgens (enzalutamide, bicalutamide) — consult your oncologist.
  • Ginger IS NOT a validated preventive treatment for prostate cancer — studies are mainly preclinical.
