Ginger: 2026 Scientific Research Review
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is one of the most studied plants in the world. Over 3,000 studies are referenced on PubMed. Here's what science knows for sure, what's promising, and what remains to be proven.
What is firmly established (multiple meta-analyses)
- Nausea and vomiting: validated antiemetic effect — ginger and ginger and pregnancy, chemo, post-operative, ginger for motion sickness. Level of evidence: A
- anti-inflammatory-inflammation-natural-remedy">Systemic inflammation: reduction of CRP, IL-6, TNF-α. NF-κB mechanism confirmed in vivo and in vitro. Level of evidence: A
- Ginger blood sugar and insulin: reduction of fasting blood sugar, HbA1c, ginger HOMA-IR. More than 10 randomized trials. Level of evidence: A-
- Joint pain: efficacy comparable to ibuprofen in knee osteoarthritis (Altman 2001, Wigler 2003). Level of evidence: B+
- Dyslipidemia: reduction of LDL, triglycerides in several meta-analyses. Level of evidence: B+
What is promising (preliminary clinical studies)
- Cancer: pro-apoptotic effects in vitro on colorectal, breast, ovarian cancer cells — no conclusive clinical trials to date
- Ginger and Alzheimer's / neurodegeneration: reduction of amyloid aggregates in vivo in mice, some positive human pilot trials
- Male fertility: improved sperm motility in 3 trials (Iran, Egypt) — consistent results but limited replication
- liver-gras">Ginger NASH / fatty liver: reduction of liver markers in 2 randomized trials
- Depression: effects on serotonin/dopamine in vivo — one positive clinical trial (Jahangir 2015)
What remains to be proven
- Optimal dosage: studies use from 500mg to 3g/day — no consensus
- Optimal duration of supplementation
- Drug interactions: insufficient data for anticoagulants at high doses
- Long-term effects (>12 months): few studies
Key identified active compounds
- [6]-gingerol: main anti-inflammatory and antiemetic active compound in ginger
- [6]-shogaol: formed during drying/cooking, more potent than gingerol on some targets
- Zingerone: antioxidant active compound, formed by heat
- Paradol: thermogenic active compound
