Ginger and acid reflux (GERD): natural remedy or danger?

Does ginger help with acid reflux?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects 20% of adults. Ginger is often cited as a natural remedy — but is this justified?

What the research shows

  • Gastric Motility — Ginger accelerates stomach emptying. A stomach that empties faster = less pressure = less reflux.
  • Esophageal Sphincter — Some studies suggest that ginger strengthens the tone of the lower esophageal sphincter.
  • Anti-inflammatory — Ginger reduces inflammation of the esophageal lining damaged by acid.
  • Anti-nausea — Ginger combats nausea associated with GERD.

Precautions

Ginger is generally well-tolerated, but at high doses it can increase acidity in some people. Start with small doses and observe your reaction.

Sugar worsens GERD

Sugar slows gastric emptying and promotes fermentation, increasing intra-abdominal pressure and reflux. A ginger shot with 34g of sugar/100ml can worsen GERD instead of relieving it.
