Ginger and psoriatic arthritis: autoimmune joint inflammation

Ginger reduces inflammatory markers (CRP, IL-17, TNF-α) involved in psoriatic arthritis by targeting NF-κB and JAK-STAT pathways — the same pathways targeted by biotherapies (adalimumab, ixekizumab) but with much lower potency. It is relevant as a supplement, not a substitute.

Psoriatic arthritis: a disease with a dual component

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) combines:

  • Inflammatory arthritis (joints: fingers, toes, spine)
  • Enthesitis (anti-inflammatory-inflammation-natural-remedy">inflammation of tendon insertions)
  • Cutaneous psoriasis (plaques)
  • Dactylitis ("sausage digit")

The pathophysiological key: overexpression of IL-17A, IL-23, TNF-α by Th17 cells and macrophages. Ginger inhibits these three cytokines, hence its potential interest.

Clinical data on inflammatory arthritis

Most studies focus on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) rather than PsA specifically. But since PsA shares the IL-17/TNF-α mechanisms with RA, the results are transferable:

  • Zhu et al. study (2022): 500 mg ginger/day for 12 weeks → CRP -28%, DAS28 (RA activity score) -22% vs placebo
  • Naderi et al. study (2023): combination of ginger + turmeric → significant reduction in joint pain scores (p<0.05)

Ginger + turmeric + black pepper: the anti-inflammatory ginger triad

This combination — present in INTI Drink — targets autoimmune joint inflammation through:

  • Ginger → inhibition of COX-2, 5-LOX, NF-κB
  • Turmeric → inhibition of NF-κB, JAK/STAT, IL-6
  • Black pepper (piperine) → ↑ curcumin bioavailability by 2000%

No gastrointestinal side effects at food doses — unlike NSAIDs which can aggravate cutaneous psoriasis. See also ginger and cutaneous psoriasis for the dermatological component.
