Ginger for children: nausea, safety and recommended doses

Parents often seek natural alternatives to antiemetic medications for their children. The ginger is one of the few plants with a well-established safety profile — but doses and precautions differ from adults.

Motion sickness (main pediatric use)

The seasick ginger and road sickness are particularly common in children (3-12 years). The European Commission E and the EMA recognize the use of ginger for kinetic nausea.

Safety and minimum age

General recommendations (Commission E, ESCOP):

• Before 2 years : not recommended without medical advice
• 2-6 years : possible use with pediatric advice, very reduced doses
• 6-12 years old : 0.5-1g/day maximum (standardized extract)
• 12 years and over : normal adult doses

How to give ginger to a child

• ginger infusion light : 1-2 thin slices of fresh ginger in 200ml of lukewarm water — gentler than concentrate
• Ginger in cooking : always safe culinary doses for all ages
• Diluted concentrate : for those over 12 years old, a few drops of INTI in 200ml of water

Important precautions

• Avoid products with added sugar (such as comparison INTI vs GIMBER) for children who have dental problems
• Consult a pediatrician before any medicinal use in children under 6 years old.
• Ginger may interact with anticoagulant medications (rare in children)
