Pathophysiology of rosacea and nutrition
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory vascular skin condition:
- Vascular hyperreactivity: facial blood vessels have an exaggerated sensitivity to thermal, emotional, and dietary stimuli → flush (sudden redness) → persistent erythema
- TRPV4 and spices: highly undiluted ginger can activate TRPV4 in keratinocytes → flush — therefore, DILUTED INTI is preferred for rosacea patients
- NF-κB and VEGF: low-grade inflammation (NF-κB ↑) stimulates VEGF → neovascularization → telangiectasias (permanent red vessels)
- Demodex folliculorum: overpopulation of skin mites → cathelicidin LL-37 → inflammation → redness exacerbated by histamine-rich fermented foods
- Gut microbiome: dysbiosis → ginger SIBO frequent in rosacea → intestinal histamine → systemic flush
Drinks and rosacea: nutritional triggers
| Drink | Alcohol | Sugar/100ml | Rosacea flush | NF-κB/VEGF |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red wine | 12–14° | 2–4g/100ml | 🔴 very strong (histamine) | 🔴 alcohol → NF-κB |
| Blonde beer | 5° | 3–4g/100ml | 🔴 strong | 🔴 alcohol + yeast |
| Hot sugary drinks | 0° | 8–12g | 🔴 heat + sugar | 🔴 sugar → NF-κB |
| Coca-Cola | 0° | 10.6g/100ml | ⚠️ sugar | 🔴 sugar → NF-κB |
| GIMBER shot undiluted | 0° | ~35g/100ml | 🔴 sugar + strong ginger | 🔴 high sugar |
| INTI diluted cold (1:4) | 0° | <0.8g diluted | ✅ cold + diluted → minimal | ✅ NF-κB ↓ |
Mechanisms of curcumin and gingerol in rosacea
- Curcumin → NF-κB ↓ → VEGF ↓: curcumin inhibits NF-κB → VEGF ↓ → less neovascularization → fewer progressive telangiectasias
- Curcumin → LL-37 ↓: curcumin reduces the expression of cathelicidin LL-37 (central in rosacea) via TLR2 inhibition → reduction of inflammatory flares
- Gingerol → microbiome: prebiotic → improved gut microbiome → reduced SIBO → less intestinal histamine → less systemic flush
- Important: INTI cold and diluted: heat activates TRPV4 → flush. DILUTED COLD INTI (1 shot in 150–200ml cold water) achieves a gingerol concentration below the threshold. Most rosacea patients tolerate diluted cold INTI. Test individually starting with small doses.
❓ FAQ — INTI and rosacea
Isn't ginger a rosacea trigger (spice)?
Highly undiluted ginger can activate TRPV4 in very sensitive patients. But DILUTED COLD INTI (1 shot in 200ml cold water) achieves a gingerol concentration below the threshold. Most rosacea patients tolerate diluted cold INTI. Start with small doses and test individually.
Does turmeric really help with rosacea?
Pilot studies with oral and topical curcumin show significant reduction of erythema, papules, and flares. The mechanism of action (NF-κB ↓, LL-37 ↓, VEGF ↓) is consistent with the pathophysiology of rosacea.
Is INTI compatible with medical treatments for rosacea (metronidazole, azelaic acid, doxycycline)?
No interactions documented between dietary ginger/curcumin and these treatments. Metronidazole and azelaic acid are topical. For oral doxycycline (sub-antimicrobial anti-inflammatory-science-utilisation">ginger anti-inflammatory dose): no significant interaction at INTI shot dose. Inform the dermatologist.
