Why sugar is the decisive criterion
When considering a ginger drink for health, you instinctively think of ginger content, organic certification, convenient packaging. Rarely sugar. Yet, this is where the differences between brands are greatest — and most hidden.
The WHO recommends limiting free sugars to less than 25g per day for adult women, 36g for men. A single shot of some ginger drinks can represent 20 to 40% of this daily limit.

What 35g of sugar per 100ml means in practice
A ginger concentrate with 35g sugar/100ml contains:
- 🍬 3.3× more sugar than a can of Coca-Cola (10.6g/100ml)
- 🍬 Approximately 10.5g of sugar in a single 30ml shot — equivalent to 2.5 sugar cubes
- 📊 42% of the recommended daily allowance of free sugars (adult female) in one serving
- ⚠️ This sugar primarily comes from added syrup, not from the ginger itself
For comparison: fresh ginger naturally contains only 1.7g of sugar per 100g. High sugar content in some concentrates is therefore entirely due to added syrup to mask bitterness.
Why sugar negates the benefits of ginger
This is the paradox of sugary ginger drinks:
- Ginger inhibits inflammation-mecanisme-cle-ginger-sugar-explanation-2026">NF-κB → inflammation reduction
- Added sugar (fructose/sucrose) activates NF-κB → inflammation → insulin resistance
- Ginger improves insulin sensitivity via AMPK
- Added sugar inhibits AMPK → insulin resistance
In other words: a heavily sweetened ginger drink can partially nullify the metabolic benefits it promises at a molecular level.

| Certification | Organic visible | Absent or vague |
❓ FAQ — Sugar in ginger drinks
Why do ginger concentrates contain so much sugar?
Pure artisanal ginger is intense and bitter. To make it easier to consume diluted in water, many manufacturers add sugar syrup, honey, or agave to correct the taste. The result: a more "drinkable" but much higher-sugar product.
Are the natural sugars in ginger different from added sugars?
Yes. Fresh ginger contains 1.7g natural sugars/100g — bound to the fibre matrix, with a different glycemic impact than free added syrup.
Can I consume a shot with 35g sugar/100ml if I have diabetes-management-clinical-evidence-2026">diabetes?
Not recommended without medical advice. The glycemic impact of a high-sugar concentrate can counteract the anti-diabetic benefits of ginger (AMPK, insulin sensitivity).
Does INTI contain sugar?
INTI Elixir is prepared artisanally without added sugar. The low sugar content comes solely from the naturally occurring sugars in fresh ginger (1.19g/100ml).
3 ingredients. Organic certified. Active gingerols intact. Made in Belgium.
Sugars: 1.19g/100ml — what you see on the label is purely ginger.
