Ginger and blood pressure: Does it lower hypertension? Scientific evidence (2026)

Ginger and Blood Pressure: What Does the Science Say?

High blood pressure (hypertension) affects over 1 billion people worldwide and is the leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Can ginger help?

The Evidence

A meta-analysis of clinical studies shows that ginger supplementation has a moderate blood pressure-lowering effect:

  • Systolic blood pressure: average -6 mmHg
  • Diastolic blood pressure: average -2 mmHg

The effect is strongest in people with high baseline blood pressure and with long-term use (8+ weeks).

How Ginger Lowers Blood Pressure

1. Vasodilation

Gingerols stimulate the production of nitric oxide (NO) in blood vessels, leading to vasodilation and lower blood pressure.

2. Calcium Channel Blocker

Ginger acts as a natural calcium channel blocker — the same mechanism as blood pressure medications like amlodipine.

3. Anti-inflammatory

Chronic vascular inflammation increases blood pressure. Ginger's anti-inflammatory action (COX-2, LOX, inflammation-mecanisme-cle-ginger-sugar-explanation-2026">NF-κB) reduces this vascular inflammation.

4. ACE Inhibition

Preliminary evidence suggests that ginger inhibits the ACE enzyme — the same target as ACE inhibitors (enalapril, lisinopril).

Recommended Dosage

  • Blood pressure support: 2-4g ginger per day
  • Duration: at least 8 weeks
  • Format: a daily INTI ginger shotturmeric enhances the cardiovascular effect

Important

Ginger is a supplement to, not a replacement for, blood pressure medication. Consult your doctor, especially if you are taking blood pressure medication.
