Skin aging: the 4 key mechanisms
The aging of ginger skin is caused by:
- cortisol-naturel">ginger oxidative stress: UV, pollution, tobacco → free radicals → degradation of collagen, membrane lipids
- Glycation: sugar + skin proteins → AGE (advanced glycation end-products) → stiffening
- Chronic inflammation (inflamm-aging): pro-inflammatory cytokines → active MMPs → degraded collagen
- Decreased collagen: -1% per year after age 25, accelerated by UV and stress
Mechanisms of ginger on the skin
1. Antioxidant protection (anti-UV)
Zingerones and paradols are Nrf2-class antioxidants — they activate endogenous glutathione and SOD synthesis. In vitro study: 6-shogaol at 5 µM reduces UV-B induced cellular DNA damage by 65%.
Oral (systemic) AND topical (cream with 0.5–1% gingerol) use → complementary protection.
2. Collagen stimulation via MMP inhibition
MMP-1 and MMP-3 (collagenases, stromelysinase) are activated by inflammation and UV. Ginger inhibits NF-κB → less induction of MMPs → less degradation of dermal collagen.
Study on human fibroblasts (Skin Pharmacol. Physiol., 2018): ginger extract reduces UV-B induced MMP-1 expression by 42%.
3. Anti-hyperpigmentation
Tyrosinase is the key enzyme in melanin synthesis. 6-gingerol inhibits tyrosinase (IC50 = 68 µM) — less potent than hydroquinone but without toxicity. Synergistic action with vitamin C and niacinamide.
4. Skin anti-inflammatory
Reactive, rosacea-prone, and irritated skin benefit from ginger's anti-COX-2 action. Reduction of erythema and itching associated with chronic skin inflammation.
Oral vs topical: which use for which result?

Ginger and skin microbiota
The skin has its own microbiome. Oral ginger improves intestinal permeability and reduces systemic inflammation → reduction of the “gut-skin axis” which contributes to acne, eczema and psoriasis.
INTI beauty protocol
Oral routine
- 1 INTI shot in the morning on an empty stomach (maximum bioavailability on an empty stomach)
- Combine: vitamin C (500 mg), vitamin E (100 IU), zinc (15 mg) for skin synergy
- Minimum duration: 8–12 weeks for visible effects on complexion
Homemade ginger mask
- 1 tsp fresh ginger juice + 1 tbsp Manuka ginger and honey + 3 drops rosehip oil
- Apply for 15 min, rinse with lukewarm water
- 1–2 times/week
- ⚠️ Do not apply neat on sensitive skin — always dilute
FAQ ginger & skin
Can ginger really reduce wrinkles?
Indirectly, by preserving existing collagen (MMP inhibition) and protecting against UV. It does not "regenerate" deep wrinkles, but can slow their appearance with regular use over 6–12 months.
Is ginger safe for oily, acne-prone skin?
Oral: yes, beneficial anti-inflammatory. Topical: dilute (max 2%), pure ginger can irritate acne-prone skin. Systemic action (gut-skin axis) is often more interesting.
How long to see changes in complexion?
Complete skin regeneration takes 28–42 days (depending on age). The first improvements in complexion radiance and homogeneity appear after 6–8 weeks of daily consumption.
