Ginger in Pregnancy: Safety & Nausea
Pregnancy nausea affects 70-80% of all pregnant women. And ginger is one of the few natural remedies that is both clinically effective and safe for pregnant women.
What does science say?
A Cochrane review of 12 randomized controlled trials confirmed: Ginger significantly reduces pregnancy nausea compared to placebo. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends ginger as a first-line treatment for pregnancy nausea.
Safety
Several clinical studies involving over 1,000 pregnant women confirm:
- ✅ No increased risk of birth defects
- ✅ No increased risk of preterm birth
- ✅ No increased risk of low birth weight
- ✅ Safe at doses up to 1g/day
Dosage for Nausea
- Recommended Dose: 250mg, 4x daily (1g total dose)
- Start: as soon as nausea begins (usually weeks 6-12)
- Form: Ginger tea, ginger capsules, or an INTI Organic Ginger Shot
- Timing: in the morning before getting up and before meals
How Ginger Works Against Nausea
Ginger blocks 5-HT3 serotonin receptors — the same target as ondansetron (Zofran). At the same time, it accelerates gastric emptying by 25-50%, which reduces the feeling of fullness that contributes to nausea.
Important Notes
- Do not exceed 1g/day without medical advice
- Inform your midwife or doctor
- For severe hyperemesis gravidarum, medical treatment is required
