What the organic label guarantees (and doesn't guarantee)
The organic label (EU organic, Ecocert, Biogarantie) guarantees:
- ✅ Agriculture without synthetic pesticides
- ✅ No GMOs
- ✅ Animal welfare (for animal products)
- ✅ Processing methods limited to an approved list
The organic label does NOT guarantee:
- ❌ Absence of sugar — rietsuiker (cane sugar) can be organic and present in large quantities
- ❌ Low glycemic index
- ❌ Quantity of preserved bioactive molecules (organic pasteurization = pasteurization)
- ❌ Absence of flavors (organic natural flavors are permitted)
"Organic" drinks and their actual sugar content
| "Organic" drink | Sugar/100ml | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Biotta Organic Apple Juice | 11g | Free fructose, no fiber |
| GIMBER Original (certified organic) | ~35g | Organic rietsuiker = still sugar |
| Innocent Organic (smoothie) | 11-13g | Organic pasteurized = same vitamin loss |
| Organic ginger shots in Belgian supermarkets | 5-10g | Added organic cane sugar |
| INTI Ginger Elixir | <4g natural | Zero added sugar, carefully prepared |
Is organic sugar worse than conventional sugar?
Metabolically, no. Research shows no significant difference in glycemic response between organic and conventional sugar:
- Organic and conventional sucrose have the same chemical formula (C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁)
- Their hydrolysis into glucose + fructose in the small intestine is identical
- The insulin peak is identical for an equivalent amount
- Activation of hepatic ChREBP liver-protection-hepatique-nash">and de novo lipogenesis are identical
The only difference is the absence of pesticide residues — a real advantage but unrelated to the glycemic impact.
The real questions to ask before buying an "organic health" drink
- How much sugar per 100ml? → If >5g, questionable regardless of the label
- Is there added sugar? → "No added sugar" = only naturally occurring sugar in ingredients
- What is the process? → Organic pasteurized = bioactive molecules destroyed (like the conventional version)
- What is the actual amount of active ingredient? → 0.04% ginger in an "organic ginger" shot is insufficient
FAQ — Organic drinks vs INTI
Is INTI certified organic? INTI is an artisanal product carefully prepared. Check the product page for current certifications. Regardless of the label, ingredients are qualitatively sourced and without added sugar.
Is organic juice better than conventional juice? For health (apart from pesticides), the difference is marginal. The real difference is the amount of sugar and the process, not the organic label.
Is an organic product necessarily healthier? No. Organic food can reduce exposure to synthetic pesticides, but a sugary organic product remains sugary. Always read the nutritional label.
