Ginger for nausea: motion sickness, chemotherapy, post-operative

Ginger for nausea: motion sickness, chemo, post-operative

Ginger is the most well-documented natural antiemetic. Beyond ginger and ginger and pregnancy-related nausea, its effects have been tested in very different contexts — with remarkable results.

Ginger's antiemetic mechanism

Gingerol and shogaol act on two levels:

  • Blocking 5-HT3 receptors (serotonin) in the ginger gastroenteritis-intestinal tract — the same mechanism as ondansetron (Zofran), a medicinal antiemetic
  • Accelerating gastric emptying — reduces food stagnation, the main cause of motion sickness nausea

Ginger for motion sickness nausea

A randomized study (Grontved & Hentzer, 1986, ORL) tested 1g of ginger powder vs. placebo in 80 young military recruits prone to ginger seasickness. Result: significant reduction in the number of vomiting episodes and cold sweats in the ginger group.

A 2014 meta-analysis (Lete & Allué) of 7 randomized trials confirmed the effectiveness of ginger on kinetic nausea (seasickness, car, plane).

Nausea related to ginger chemotherapy

Chemotherapy-induced nausea (CINV - Chemotherapy-Induced zenzero-nausea-gravidanza-mal-auto-chemioterapia-2026">Nausea and Vomiting) is among the most difficult to treat. Studies have tested ginger as a supplement to standard antiemetics:

  • Ryan et al. (2012), Supportive Care in Cancer, n=576: significant reduction in acute nausea (first 24h post-chemo) with 0.5-1g of ginger vs. placebo
  • Pillai et al. (2011): 40% reduction in nausea intensity with ginger in combination with ondansetron

Important: in case of chemotherapy, always consult your oncologist before changing anything. Ginger can interact with certain medications.

Ginger for post-operative nausea

Post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) affects 20-30% of patients. A meta-analysis (Chaiyakunapruk et al., 2006, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology) of 363 patients showed that ginger significantly reduces the risk of PONV (OR=0.35, p=0.046).
