Ginger against nausea : motion sickness, chemo, post-operative

The ginger is the best documented natural antiemetic. Beyond the nausea of ginger and ginger and pregnancy, its effects have been tested in very different contexts — with remarkable results.

Antiemetic mechanism of ginger

Gingerol and shogaol act on two levels:

  • Blocking 5-HT3 receptors (serotonin) in the tract ginger gastroenteritis-intestinal — same mechanism as ondansetron (Zofran), medicinal antiemetic
  • Acceleration of gastric emptying — reduces food stagnation, the main cause of transport nausea

Nausea ginger motion sickness

A randomized study (Grontved & Hentzer, 1986, ENT) tested 1g of ginger powder vs placebo in 80 young military recruits subject to seasick ginger. Result: significant reduction in the number of vomiting and cold sweats in the ginger group.

A 2014 meta-analysis (Lete & Allué) on 7 randomized trials confirms the effectiveness of ginger on kinetic nausea (seasickness, car sickness, plane sickness).

Nausea related to ginger chemotherapy

Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea (CINV) zenzero-nausea-gravidanza-mal-auto-chemioterapia-2026">Nausea and Vomiting) are among the most difficult to treat. Studies have tested ginger as a complement to standard antiemetics:

  • Ryan et al. (2012), Supportive Care in Cancer, n=576: significant reduction in acute nausea (first 24 hours post-chemotherapy) with 0.5-1g of ginger vs placebo
  • Pillai et al. (2011): reduction in the intensity of nausea by 40% with ginger in combination with ondansetron

Important : in the case of chemotherapy, absolutely consult your oncologist before changing anything. Ginger may interact with certain medications.

ginger post-operative nausea

Post-operative nausea (PONV) affects 20-30% of patients. A meta-analysis (Chaiyakunapruk et al., 2006, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology) on 363 patients showed that ginger significantly reduces the risk of PONV (OR = 0.35, p = 0.046).
