Breast cancer in Belgium: high prevalence
In Belgium, breast cancer is the most common female cancer: approximately 11,000 new cases per year, with a 5-year survival rate of ~90% for localized stages. Remission is now the norm for many patients — but the risk of recurrence (10–20% at 10 years for ER+ cancer) remains a major concern.

Sugar and recurrence risk: documented mechanisms
1. Hyperinsulinemia and IGF-1: the growth promoter
Insulin and IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1) are cell growth promoters via IR/IGF-1R receptors that activate PI3K/Akt/mTOR and MAPK/ERK. Large epidemiological studies (Women's Health Initiative, EPIC) show that women with the highest insulin and IGF-1 levels have a 1.5 to 2 times higher risk of breast cancer recurrence. Sugar — via chronic hyperinsulinemia — keeps IGF-1 elevated.
Ginger activates AMPK (which inhibits mTOR), reduces PI3K/Akt signaling in tumor mammary cells, and can reduce hepatic IGF-1 production via FOXO3a.
2. Aromatase and post-menopausal estrogens
After menopause, estrogens are mainly produced by aromatase in adipose tissue (androstenedione → estrone conversion). Obesity and hyperinsulinemia activate aromatase via PGE₂ and NF-κB in adipocytes — increasing local estrogen levels in the breast. For ER+ cancers (75% of cases), this is a major tumor promotion mechanism. Ginger moderately inhibits aromatase (in vitro studies) and reduces NF-κB in mammary adipocytes.
3. NF-κB and natural anti-inflammatory: the pro-tumor environment
NF-κB is overactivated in aggressive breast cancers and is linked to treatment resistance (chemoresistance, radioresistance). In remission, chronic low-grade inflammation (sugar, lifestyle) keeps NF-κB active and can select dormant resident cells for recurrence. 6-gingerol inhibits NF-κB in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells (Cancer Lett 2016 studies).
4. 5-HT₃ and post-ginger chemotherapy nausea
Ginger is one of the most documented natural antiemetics for chemotherapy-induced nausea (Ryan et al. meta-analysis, Support Care Cancer 2012). This specific property makes ginger a particularly relevant supplement for patients still undergoing treatment or coming out of chemo.
Comparison of drinks for women in breast cancer remission
| Drink | Sugar /100 ml | Remission impact | IGF-1 / NF-κB |
|---|---|---|---|
| INTI best ginger shot | <4 g | ✅ NF-κB↓, AMPK↑, aromatase↓ | IGF-1 regulated, NF-κB↓ |
| GIMBER concentrate | ~35 g | ❌ IGF-1↑, aromatase↑ (adipose) | IGF-1↑, NF-κB↑ |
| Fruit juices | 9–12 g | ❌ ginger insulin↑ → IGF-1↑ | IGF-1↑ |
| Sugary sodas | 10–11 g | ❌ Hyperinsulinemia → recurrence risk↑ | IGF-1↑↑, NF-κB↑ |
| Plain water + lemon | <1 g | ✅ Neutral, hydration | Neutral |
❓ FAQ — Breast cancer in remission and ginger
Does ginger interact with tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors?
Theoretical interactions exist via CYP2D6 for tamoxifen. Clinically, at dietary doses, few documented interactions. ALWAYS CONSULT your oncologist before introducing any supplement during hormonal treatment.
Does ginger have estrogenic effects?
No — ginger is not phytoestrogenic (unlike soy, red clover). It does not activate α or β estrogen receptors. For ER+ cancers, this is a reassuring point.
Can I consume INTI during radiotherapy?
Ginger has documented radioprotective properties (protection of healthy tissues via Nrf2) and anti-bloating-natural-remedy-2026">nausea. No documented contraindications during radiotherapy. Report it to your oncology team.
Is GIMBER not recommended for women in remission?
GIMBER contains ~35 g of sugar/100 ml. The chronic hyperinsulinemia generated by this load is documented as a risk factor for ER+ breast cancer recurrence. INTI with 1.19g/100ml is the appropriate choice if you want the benefits of ginger without this risk.
1.19g sugar per 100ml · NF-κB↓ · AMPK↑ · moderate aromatase↓
Always under oncological supervision. For those who want to support their remission — without the sugar that fuels pro-tumor processes.
