Progressive MS: Neuroinflammation, NF-kB, and the Unexpected Role of sugar-free ginger shots
Progressive MS — both primary progressive (PPMS) and secondary progressive (ginger-pain-2026">SPMS) — is the most debilitating and least treatable form of MS. Unlike the relapsing-remitting form, classic disease-modifying treatments have limited efficacy in progressive forms, which are dominated by chronic neurodegeneration rather than acute inflammatory flares.
Mechanisms in Progressive MS: NF-kB and Microglia
In progressive MS, the disease's driver is not peripheral auto-ginger immunity (T-lymphocytes in the blood) but intrinsic CNS neuroinflammation:
- Chronically activated microglia: activated by myelin debris → TNF-α, IL-1β, NO, free radicals via NF-kB
- Reactive astrocytes: transformed into pro-inflammatory A1 phenotype via NF-kB → neurotoxicity
- Mitochondrial oxidative anxiety-<a%20href=" https:>cortisol-natural-relief">stress: neurons in chronic lesions accumulate mitochondrial damage → energy deficit → axonal apoptosis
- Remyelination failure: oligodendrocyte precursors cannot mature in an NF-kB-dependent inflammatory environment
Gingerol and Neuroinflammation: Promising Preliminary Data
- Inhibition of microglial NF-kB: 6-gingerol reduces microglial activation and TNF-α production by 45% in neuroinflammation models (Neurochemistry International, 2019)
- Oligodendrocyte protection: gingerol protects oligodendrocytes from oxidative stress in EAE models (Multiple Sclerosis Journal, 2020)
- Nrf2 activation: induces glutathione and SOD in astrocytes and neurons → ↓ mitochondrial oxidative stress
- BBB protection: gingerol reduces blood-brain barrier permeability via inhibition of NF-kB-dependent MMPs
Important Limitations
Honesty is crucial here: progressive MS is an extremely complex disease, and this data is predominantly preclinical. Gingerol is not a treatment for MS. Patients on natalizumab, ocrelizumab, siponimod, or other DMTs should not adjust their treatment without neurological advice. INTI can be considered an general anti-inflammatory supplement, not a therapeutic ginger-shot-comparison-2026">alternative.
INTI in the Context of Progressive MS
- Mediterranean diet rich in polyphenols (oleocanthal, resveratrol, gingerol) → ↓ neuroinflammation
- INTI 15ml/day: gingerol without excessive sugar (1.19g/100ml — sugar activates NF-kB and exacerbates neuroinflammation)
- Vitamin D (2000-4000 IU/day depending on serum levels): essential in MS
- Adapted aerobic exercise: proven reduction of activated microglia
Summary
Progressive MS is driven by chronic neuroinflammation via NF-kB and microglia — a target on which gingerol exerts documented, albeit preliminary, effects. INTI, low in sugar and artisanally prepared, is the cleanest available source of gingerol. A well-considered supplement — not a treatment — in the integrative approach to progressive MS.
